Far from it.
I watched a documentary and it was about a beheading in olden times where it went badly wrong and the executioner was frowned upon for it. I think he had 3 goes before the victim died.
The documentary went on to perform beheadings on dead animals just to show how hard it is even when the body is still.
This is also why the guillotine was invented because beheading by hand isn't to Hollywood standards.
I can also recount stories of beheadings I saw when I used to live in Nigeria.

All depends on if they are real zombies or just infected.

With real Zombies weapons like Katana's will be useless its a slashing weapon remember you need to sever the spine or damage the brain. If you have to use a sword you would be better off with a bigger weapon like a claymore or ******* sword these are designed more for bludgeoning and will easily destroy a zombies brains.

Personally i would chose a bow for long range, and probably a mace for close range.

Would suggest a Roman Gladius or something similar over a Katana as it would be much better suited for the task, thanks to Hollywood and anime Katanas seem to have developed a godlike reputation despite merely being an average sword that looks really cool. The evolution of sword design did not end with the Katana, they are basically the magnum revolver of the sword world, look great and are very good at what they do, but personally ill take the AK or the Uzi thank you very much.

I.E If Highlander had been filmed realistically it would have had a 5 minute running time as the guy with the Toledo rapier would have killed MacLeod just after the opening credits finished rolling.
 
H&K G3A3 (More specifically AG-3F2 with all the bells and whistles). You will want something with a heavy round as I would suspect 5.56 Nato rounds wouldn't really do much to something that is already dead. The good thing about having a heavy weapon with a bayonet is that you can hit them with it too :).

If I was going fantasy I would say light saber :).

Always thought a shotgun would be awesome. Trouble is, look how huge shotgun shells are. You could carry waaaaaaay more normal cased bullets from 9mm to 5.56mm and a bullet is a bullet at the end of the day.

Similar to another poster I'd probably go for an MP5 as my main weapon. Light weight, 30 bullet clip, most common ammo type being 9mm, full auto and single fire and reliable. I'd also have a 20 capacity clip glock side arm.
Melee weapon would also be needed, for which I'd chose a metal baseball bat. :p
