Hi,

I have recently had problems with Zone Alarm Fire Wall. I have used it for a few years and never had a problem. How ever recently it blocked port 80 on my PC ( which is running XP Pro SP2 ) and Spy Bot Search & Destory ( SBSD )also helped in this back lash on port 80 !

I have fixed the SPSD program by using the program update utility, and it now works fine. ZA appears to not want to play along any more. So I uninstalled it and down loaded the latest free version from the ZA home page.
When I install the program and reboot. My XP gets stuck on the knight rider bar, just before it should go to the user accounts.
So I go into safe mode and unistall it, re-boot and XP fires up to desk top no problem !

What is up with Zone Alarm !

Has any one eles had problems ?

Erm I'm pretty sure you just right click the tray icon and theres an option to turn off defence plus.

Also when it pops up a box asking you to confirm click remember and also change the type of program to trusted application. I have it on both my laptop and desktop however I didn;t seem to get asked about d+ on my desktop. Seems like I have to different versions although it's not told me to update on either.

Comodo Firewall seems to be a very capable piece of software but, for me, it seems to be quite complicated to get it to run and configured in a way that I would like, even with the help of their forums.

So what I am now using is Vista Firewall Control...

This is also free and allows you control over outbound connections via Vista's own built in firewall. Whilst this application is no where near as sohiticated s Comodo it more than meets my needs :)

ZA is rubbish, thats what up with it, i had no end of problems with it to when i used to use it, but i sacked it for Comodo and never looked back, been using it couple of years or so now.

Its Free to. :)
Seconded. So much better than ZA. :)

After going back to this, I still can't work out how to stop Defence+?

Or does it just spam me every time a program changes? I don't care if it thinks it's a virus, I have anti-virus software for that ffs!
You can choose not to turn it on during the install. A new version with some updates is out today/yesterday so you could download that and not install Defence+.

I too have dumped ZoneAlarm and moved over to Comodo. For me ZA worked fine for the first few days then when you booted up the PC there'd be a big delay before the PC was usable as ZA was doing whatever it was doing. If I removed, cleaned and re-installed it again would be fine for a couple of days and then the same thing.

I used to use ZA but after reading this forum I switched to Comodo and it is much better. ZA always used to make my online games crash (by asking if i wanted to allow) even though I had set it as a rule! Comodo is much better and you can choose not to use Defence+.

zone alarm is a steaming pos, if you've got a router and aren't click-happy, then you don't need a firewall

So it appears a lot of people have had problems with ZA !
I have been using ZA for a few years now and never had a problem till now, and it just will not allow XP to boot to User account screen !
It must be knocking some drivers or or files out. Plus it is now bundled with ZA Spy Ware Stopper !
