I've got two pc's on a home network connected through my router. Both have got Zonealarm (free version) installed. Recently my main PC has been slow or failed to connect to the net and outlook express has not always been able to pick up my emails (message comes back could not connect to server). The second pc has been connecting fine so I unplugged it from the network in case it was getting preference. This made no difference. I turned off Zonealarm on the main PC and everything connected fine. Turned it back on and problems again. Strange thing is this doesn't happen all the time. Any ideas?

Im not sure what will be causing the problem, but ive had problems with Zonealarm. Does your router have a built in hardware firewall? If so, it might be worth just removing zonealarm.

Its a BT Voyager 2110 which I think has a built in firewall although I can't see anyway to configure the settings using the Voyager configuration menus. I did consider turning it off but prefer the belt and braces approach!

Edit: Just checked the product spec online and it doesn't mention having a built in firewall??

Just happened again this am and last night. I try and download my emails and get the server unavailable message, turn off ZA and they download straight away. Strange thing is this is intermittent, mostly emails download ok with ZA on. Any ideas or should I just uninstall ZA and reinstall it or use the XP Firewall??

In the advanced settings in ZoneAlarm firewall, set it to allow Outgoing DNS.

Thanks. I've had a look at Advanced Settings and Outgoing DNS was enabled in Trusted Zone but not Internet Zone. I have now enabled it in the Internet Zone. Is that what you meant? Is my PC still protected ok?

Yes your machine should be fine, it was just an idea to try as I have had similar problems that this helped.

Did it help?
