Zooooom Lense

Hiya Chaps,

Righty, i would like to invest in a zoom lense, which would be used to nature mainly, zooming into birds etc..

Hm.. I have quite a bit of money, just i dont know if i could justify spending loooots (hope that makes sense). Any ideas?

Consider the 100-400 f4.5-5.6 Canon L IS USM @£1,100 - it is a popular choice around here.

70-200 Canon F4L
70-300 Canon f/4-5.6 IS
70-200 Sigma F2.8

100-300 sigma look ok

canon f4L looks sexy, dunno if it has enough z00m tho

Remember also F4 will limit you to fairly bright conditions. As long as you're shooting wildlife in sunshine these will be fine. Night-time/dusk, it'll be a challenge!

sigma 80-400 can be had for about £790 roughly, or ive seen the non dg one for 699 thats the one i have and i cant fault it at all really

I'd say the 80-400 is possibly too slow to focus for your needs.

As I said on MSN, I suggest the Sigma 100-300 f4. If you need more length the 1.4tc would fit nicely.

Agreed. From what I've seen of this lens I would also suggest it...its what I am getting in a couple of months anyway

and a few people on here now have it.

Do you need zoom? If you're just after a long tele then a 300mm f4L IS can be had for <800.

If you must then look at Canon's 70-200 f4, Sigma 70-200 f2.8, with either the canon or sigma 1.4x tc.

ive got the 80-400 and manage to shoot fast jet fighters perfectly fine, dont see the point of paying over £1000 for the canon when mine works just as fine

er...because you might be shooting things that are static and therefore require IS?

er ... no im talking about using it at airshows and airbases when the stuff is flying past you, it doesnt open up wide enough for statics

thought about looking at primes? but they are twice as much as a zoom so guess thats a no

. id say try going into a few local photoshops and asking to have a look at the lens's at the end of the day its what you feel comfortable with
