zotac 460 1 gb heat issue ,help/advice please

hello and happy new year!

My first post is to ask for advice from the more computer savvy .

It idles @50ish and runs at 99c on BFBC2, new MOH and new COD is this normal?? the fan is at 70% and still 99 even when reducing the setting in game
i changed last month from a 8800 gt 512 ( local pc shop had gift voucher or i would have bought from OC) as i wanted a new card to go dx11.

I have a 120 mm intake fan at front of case (coolermaster 335)
120 mm rear exhaust
80 mm above cpu (intake)
and this http://www.******.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=29335 which sits at 90 degrees to the gpu blowing towards gpu intake .
the rear of the card only has a tiny exhaust vent which i think is the issue .
i use msi afterburn to control the speed of the fan .

would drilling holes in the cards plastic case or making the exhaust vent larger with my dremel help .I havent found any aftermarket gpu coolers to swap the standard cooler.
i cant afford to replace the bugger and cant really take it back to the shop as it works fine just damm hot

any help advice would be great

The exhaust vent in the card itself isn't too small. They put a good amount of effort in designing the cooling system for GPU's and wouldn't make a simple mistake like making a vent 'Too Small'...

Since the card is fairly new, I doubt it needs cleaning, but you are correct, these temperatures don't seem right, especially with the fan running at 70%

It's very possible that the card is faulty. Is this local PC Shop you bought it from trustworthy?
Was the card brand new when you bought it from them (no packages opened etc) or it's possibly they have sold you a faulty card i'm afraid.

Although your problem here is cooling, it's not in fact a major issue, only when the card reaches around 125 degrees or over will it become a major problem, and in which case thermal trip will shut down your system.

If it's really bothering you, i'd try an aftermarket cooler first and if still no luck, your just stuck with the temperature.

ALSO: You may want to edit your signature, 4 lines maximum, just before a mod catches you!

And welcome to the forums.

First thing is first. Don't drill any holes in the cooler. It will do nothing for you cooling but ruin the the card and the warranty.
A) remove and clean your front 120mm filer!
B) increase the speed of the front fan
If not at max
C) move the card away from your top Pciex slot to the lower one away from the hot CPU cooler mobo allowing and space allowing. ( without losing 16x)
D) cable management! Tidy your cables allow more air in and around ur case.
E) re-seat the VGA cooler using a artic cooler3/4
F) install a 120 intake fan on the case panel to blow towards VGA. Drilling will be req.
G) purchase off the shelf cooler zalamn / others etc.

I started of with a) easier options and g) being hardest /expensive

If ur into aftermarket cooler, Mk-13 will fit a 460

But you will need to buy the additional socket for it:-

Thank you for the replies

i have cleaned the fans /caseand tidied cables, I have even moved the HD's to the 5.25 slots on top with adaptors and removed the HD rack that was behind the front fan to improve flow .
The box was sealed so no problem there.
Its a matx board so cant move graphics card
i just dont like the idea i can use it as a kettle and would like to improve the lifespan of the card.

Those temps are very, very wrong. My 460 idles at 37C and maxes out at 67C in Furmark even with a significant overclock and raised voltage. I have a reference cooler as well, so nothing fancy there. The fan never goes above about 44%. These are the kind of temps you should be experiencing, too.

These cards are well known for running cool. Your card is approaching inoperable temperatures at stock speeds in games. I would consider send it back and getting a replacement.

thanks for the advice folks heres an update on the hot zotac

with afterburner it runs 32 on idle running fans on auto ( 40%)
this after modding the case now 2 120 mm (intake ) blow down on card

in BFBC 2 on auto settings it goes straight back to high 90's
same on MOH fans at 70 % maxed

i cant find the damn receipt to take it back so it looks like i will be re pasting to see if that helps

Would the shop take it back without receipt?,i will ask next week fingers crossed


ps i know thet mods arent the best looking ........compared to some of the beasts on this site heheh

mate you haven't seen the mods done with string! I have a zotac 460 I will have a look at temps for you when I get home. not at uni yet.
