Was just looking at todays special offer, and those bare bones look just like what I'm after. Been looking for something good for a htpc for ages. Just out of curiosity though I spotted the atom based one for £50 less in the same section.

Because its cheeper I'm curious, does anyone have experiance using either of these? Can they both play streamed 1080p mkv over a lan?

The one thats £40 cheaper uses integrated intel gpu which is pants, the ION one is the best bet, i know they can play 1080p MKV i dont know about over lan.

Well my current machine which I use plays it fine over 100mbit so that part shouldnt be an issue. Thanks I havent experiance integrated gfx for a long time so wasnt sure how good they are now.

*edit
Barebones units, they jsut need ram and a hd right?

Yeah the Intel integrated graphics are ok for a basic desktop but ION has video acceleration. Yeah Atom barebones need RAM and HDD.

Well thats ok then. got a spare 160gb laptop hd sitting around. Might still have some old ddr2 sodimm too. hmmm

You can get an Acer Revo 3610 with a very similar spec for roughly the same price as the Ion Zotac (plus the Revo actually comes with the RAM/HDD etc whereas it seems the Zotac doesn't). I've seen it mentioned the Ion1 is actually better than the Ion2 for HTPC uses, only caveat is that the D510 with the Zotac I believe is slightly more energy efficient than the 330 in the Revo allowing more chance of fanless operation, but both are dual core models...might be worth bearing in mind.
