so anyone thinking of getting one? what are your thoughts on it. It looks nice but from the pictures it looks quit big compared to the ipod.

my concern with it is that from reading reviews etc about it it sounds like the only music you can put on it is music bought from microsoft, is this right? i doubt many people will want one when they find that all the already "bought" music can't be played on it. Also as the ipod is so huge there are a lot of accesories, e.g. my gf smart car has a place designed for the ipod which plugs it straight into the car speakers and charges it, will there be any for the zune like this?

my hopes with it is that it brings down the ipod price so i can afford one of them

"Zune owners will not be able to buy and download music directly on to the player - they will need to download tracks to a PC and transfer to the device. "

I dont think that means you cant put your own music on there.
That would be 100% insane.

Assuming that isnt the case, this is the only MP3 player thats ever piqued my interest.

They do a brown one you know. LOL :D

I cannot wait for M$ to fall flat on their face and forever have to play second place to superior technology. I understand that at the moment there are some serious concerns over DRM which may tie in the Zune to WMP, M$'s own music store (which is pants by the way) and not allow transfer to other devices.

I just don't see it as a success, iPods will always be better and cooler.

EDIT: Here is a video of one in action, how slow is that. I also like one of the comments 'will it come with a ctrl+alt+del key' combination for when it crashes.

There is only DRM on the stuff you buy, ala iTunes Music Store.

All your regular CDs and MP3s are not affected, also you can send all the music you own to another friend via WiFi built in.

If you bought it off of the Music store, you can send it to a friend and they can listen to it 3 times, or have it for 3 days. However if its your ripped CD, or just normal MP3s you can send them between friends and no DRM at all is wrapped around the file.

I've not seen to much of it, only a couple of small pictures, but so far its not going to be tempting me away from my sony walkman.

Big ipod fan myself, but I hope the Zune does okay. The rate of innovation will increase if Apple has a serious competitor. I just don't think any of the other players have the clout to get Apple worried. While SONY do, they have shot themselves in the foot so many times before, I doubt they can challenge apple. Shame really as SONY have made some nice products.

Read somewhere a while ago that these would be applying drm to everything installed even non copywrite files, is this still the case?

No. that was rumour.

Only DRM is on the bought stuff from the MSN music store.

Taken from Computer Shoppers:

'In our recent analysis, we have learned that the forthcoming Zune portable media player and service will likely use a new proprietary Zune DRM that is incompatible with [the] PlaysForSure DRM that Microsoft and its OEM "partners", including Creative, SanDisk, Sony, Samsung, iriver, Archos, etc. use,' he wrote in a note to investors.
Hopeless!

I don't understand this line. Why have the bothered to mention that? Because even with an iPod you have to purchase through iTunes thus using a PC to transfer to the device?

looks crap to me

it has all the faults the ipod has, microsoft hasn't learnt anything.

stick with a creative or sandisk or any of the other better mp3 players out there.

I won't be buying one initally as 30gb is far too small. However, give microsoft a while and I'm sure they'll get something to rival the ipod+itunes combination. You just have to look at the xbox for evidence of that.

yeah, people just haven't realised thats what they are saying
I'm guessing that later models will have some kinda wifi internet capability so they can download directly?
