It's easy to sell the R290X has impeccable performance, but we haven't seen the best it can offer since it's hobbled by its stock cooler.

The R290 could be very nice.

Indeed it depends on each own users definition of slain. To get titan performance for half the price, I'd too count that as slain.

Regardless of the outcome, I am very impressed with the 290X. I wouldn't be overly happy seeing those temps but AMD have stated it is within the parameters of the card, so that's all good. I couldn't giver a hoot about the power it consumes and I would love to see some water cooled results in the futuremark/valley/heaven threads with the volts unlocked. I am unsure how much is in the tank for overclocking but when we have them under water and voltages working in AB, we will have true readings.

Great card with a great price.

The 780 already offers that (For a few months now)..

Plus when overclocked the 780 is faster than the 290X and runs cooler / quieter.

How is the 290X anything but disappointing at £450+? The 780 is already down to £450+

If Nvidia drop the 780 to £400 then AMD will have to drop prices on their launch card.

AMD will never force nvidia to do anything, they've tried pushing nvidia with lower pricing but it hasn't worked, nvidia still rules discrete GPU market.

It loses to the 780 / Titan when overclocked, both of which have been around for a while. It runs hotter, uses more power, has ridiculous temps. Since when was 95c ok?

95C !! Wow.

The price is on par with the 780, except the 780 runs cooler and quieter, uses less power, faster when overclocked.

I don't understand anyone buying this over a 780 unless you're die hard AMD fan.

Same GPU only 2560 SP's vs 2816. so about 5 to 7% slower clock for clock, faster than a GTX 780 and probably about 50/£80 less than the 290X.

Hadn't realised the temperature of the card was locked at 95c at all times, dayum, what a feature.

I disagree about the die hard AMD fan statement too.

That's not correct at all. In quiet mode Gibbo said the card operates around 85-90c and throttles if it goes over 95c. This will be with fan speed at 45% and clocks of 1000/1250 stock.

You do know these AMD reference coolers are pants don't you? 10/10 for effort, but you are aware that AIB's with custom coolers that run considerably cooler are around the corner right?

I got a release day 7970 that ran up to 85ºc in Furmark on the reference cooler, it's now under water and gets no hotter than 50ºc
