Well it is Aer Lingus I'm sure there will be a bit of ETOPS thrown in there somewhere as well.Not with that arc they aren't. I'm sure it's a "direct" with as much time over/close to land as possible.
There are a couple reasons:
1. When they have to crash land they are closer to land.
2. There are less sharks the further north you get if they have to crash land in to the sea.
