It looks like the lights went off on the ship just before it hit the bridge. On the live stream you can see construction lights on the bridge, and there are reports of 20 people unaccounted for.

On closer inspection the bridge strikes the top of the boat and this knocks the lights out..

Awful

With everything going on lately I can't really even discount foreign sabotage, but that aside how does this even happen?

I'm not sure on this. Watch the sped up video (second in OP) and at the CCTV timestamp of 01:26:36EDT all the lights on the side of the ship go out too. After it's crashed and the bridge starts collapsing, even more lights go out.

To be fair the footage showing the lights going on/off before it hit the bridge. Possible power issues? It does look like the engines are running you can see smoke out of its stacks. Dunno, we'll see as more info comes out.

Edit** just seen the same video posted further up

Several cases like it e.g

Probably a lot more. Bridge doesn't look adequate to withstand an impact from large ships, no doubt design will be scrutinized.
The amount of kinetic energy in a decent sized container ship going at a decent pace like that is absolutely immense, no way any road bridge is soaking it up. Can't beat physics.

This is a realtime video and starting a bit earlier than the second vid in OP. You can see the lights go off a few times before it hits the bridge. Still not sure I agree with the "aim for the bridge" - this could likely be the most awful coincidence of power going out and the rudder getting stuck.

EDIT: The smoke coming out of the funnels also only starts after the first lights out - backup generator coming online?

Man that's horrendous.

Side point, but the lasting damage 9/11 has done to the American psyche is prevalent in that second tweet. Nothing is an accident anymore. (When this very much is).
There's no evidence either way yet. I'm keeping an open mind. Would certainly be an effective way to inflict costly and long term economic damage and demoralise a target. Could also be a colossal **** up.
