Anyway this has kind of resolved itself. As I mentioned the machine was for my daughter, which got collected yesterday. I thought she may aswell give AOL a shot.

Well, she loaded it up and the beast is rocking and rolling. She's also rattling the floorboards with the sub I got her.

Still would have like to get to the bottom of this

Set the PC's IP to a different one?

If it was still happening with DHCP enabled there was something else going on, but without more information it would be only speculation what was causing the problem.
