Plec, as I said before, your replies are 1st class, so much thought put into someone else's conundrum. much appreciated. You're quite right in your analysis of my on-going conundrum.

cmndr_andi - those reviews - particularly the first one - are excellent, and have really given me an insight into the un-measurable aspect of picture quality which is the Dell's ace card. This may well have persuaded me...

I think half the issue here is that the monitor market is in a state of flux, with 120Hz models and LED backlighting appearing, making decisions ever harder to make, and then you have stunner's like the U2410 that suddenly seem to have issues with pink tints etc. Nightmare.

I will retreat to my corner and ponder, you've both made a big effort to help me and it's much appreciated!

OK, I don't believe in fate particularly, but when I saw the 2209WA on This Week Only, that was it, order placed! What a daft amount of money for what is clearly the best monitor in it's class...

Excited and relieved now! Thanks to all who have helped me in my indecision, I'll post my thoughts tomorrow.

What would be very nice is if someone has calibrated theirs and could post the settings? Just so I can get it looking ace as soon as possible (and therefore justify my frivolous purchase to my wife).

Glad my public decision crisis has helped others in the same boat!

Leviathon - I'd grab one now as it's cheap and may go out of stock after everyone's read this thread!

Plec,

My last request would possibly be too rude to list here, but as it's a monitor forum, a 30" Dell would be high on the list!

I do feel I've been team tagged, but that helped, as your strong recommendation stuck in my head and gently pushed me in the direction of the 2209WA.

I hear you on the dead pixels and van crash - sod's law!

Thanks for your settings - pardon my asking, but are there no colour settings to tweak or is that it?

Oddly, yesterday I went on to a calibration website from work and had a go on my 19" Dell 1908 TN panel, and found myself bobbing my head around in order to see the colour charts properly. I stopped and thought "what the hell am I considering a TN panel for?". I then thought, if the 2209WA is on This Week Only then I'm buying...

And here we are!

I moved from a CRT (Iyama Visionmaster Pro) and I was still blown away :D I am also an avid FPS gamer and it surpassed all my expectations, it realy is a great monitor.
Good to hear!

I've taken delivery of my new baby at work, and tried it on my (rather crap) works laptop. It won't pick up the correct resolution, and therefore looks a bit rubbish - soft and stretched, so no ability to test at all apart from how nicely built it is - 100% agree on all the positive comments in this regard.

The default brightness didn't strike me as terrible, I have lowered to 10 as per Plec's post, but again no test on a duff resolution. I'll see what my 4870 makes of it later!

One other point - Plec suggested sharpness at 45, but I can only select 40 or 50?

Minor update. I've plugged it in to a slightly less cack Dell desktop, and that picked up the resolution fine. Wow! What a lot of space, I'm actually surprised how much real estate over my 19" work monitor this screen has. Only connected through VGA, but lovely display, no dead pixels (using pure blue screen to test) and very uniform so far. I guess I've not tested well for stuck pixels (at least blue ones -if indeed one does have blue pixels?).

More pleased now, the 4870 awaits!

No position assumption required, you'll be glad to know!

I sit typing here on my new 2209WA, having just played at bit of UT3, viewed some photo's, etc, and I'm well impressed. UT3 particularly looks great, the blacks are, well, black! The game looks very punchy and almost 3D, brilliant stuff.

Playing a fast FPS on a larger display made me a bit giddy actually, more going on across a wider field of view I suppose!

Photo's look ace, and as I own a DSLR and have about 45,000 pictures on my HDD, maybe this monitor was a no brainer from the start! Again, the deep blacks and natural colours do stand out immediately.

The extra space over the 19" is, as I said before, more than I expected, I can now have the preview pane on in Outlook, and in Windows explorer.

I haven't got round to using that pixel tester, but I can't see any, and that's enough for me!

I can't thank enough those who helped me in making this choice, particularly Plec and cmndr_andi, your effort and assistance has been brilliant, I hope I can return the favour in some gem of advice in the future!

I'm off to explore more quality visuals, nite all... :D

One more significant comment - coming from a Viewsonic VX922, which up until the 120Hz panels we have now was (probably) the fasted LCD screen in terms of refresh (75Hz) and input lag, I can't see any difference on the 2209WA. I'm pretty decent on UT3 (just got my bum kicked, but I'm tired), and it looks and plays great. Any gamers worrying about response / lag can rest assured, this monitor is more than adequate.

Good question. I'm actually pretty happy with 22", it gave me more space than I expected, holding up various sized pieces of cardboard in front of my 19" did not help that much. It's only when I saw my desktop at 1680 x 1050 that I was pleasantly surprised. I do think that if I'd gone for a 22" TN, I'd be wanting a 24", but the 2209WA is such a good all round monitor, with e-IPS panel and top notch build and stand, a few less pixels and 2 inches is a good trade off for the price!
