Disabling IDE probing at bootup on Ubuntu

I'm trying to disable probing of certain IDE channels during bootup on Ubuntu, and am not having any luck. I need to disable probing of the drives on my SATA card at bootup (for some reason these are showing up as IDE channels) because the drivers provided with Ubuntu lock up the system on bootup otherwise. I successfully managed this previously on Slackware by adding "hdX=noprobe" parameters for each drive. This doesn't seem to be working on Ubuntu though.

Any ideas?

Well, in case anyone's interested I haven't managed to solve this directly. Instead I had to recompile the kernel - removing the offending driver - to get it booting...
