Does converting HDMI & DP to DVI retain HDCP?

A friend of mine has a pair of old Formac 1600x1200 monitors. They have DVI inputs but I don't know the exact model. He is being prevented from upgrading a very old PC by concern about losing HDCP - and thus not being able to view videos - should he get something with a HDMI or DP port which needs a converter to DVI. Will HDCP be maintained? Does he require a special adapter? His monitors do support HDCP - I know that early Formacs did not.

BTW This is a rare failure for Google: it interprets 'Formac' as 'for mac' in any complex query.

I have a cheap HDMI X2 splitter as available from many places for ~ £10-£15, the source sees HDCP but it's stripped out downstream.

Will HDCP be maintained?
I downloaded Cyberlink's Blu-ray advisor and ran it on a PC that I have a DVI (w/HDCP) monitor connected to, but using a cable that terminates in HDMI or DP (I think HDMI) and it said HDCP is available/enabled.

I'm not sure where to find HDCP content to check if it actually works.
