It's a nice enough card but anyone with a GTX 480 upgrading to this is a bit crazy, especially if their 480 clocks well. Though for a refresh only around a 10% performance increase isn't that impressive.

580gtx is 33% quicker than 5870 in 1900x1200.....

I dont think 6970 can catch that.

There's no reason at all why the 6970 can't gain 30% over the 5870, the extra memory alone will account for some of that, that's without taking into account the new architecture.

I think it's more likely that Nvidia is going to be pretty screwed until 28nm since they really can't do much else, where's AMD will have their dual GPU card too.

The problem is nobody running that card will be using such a stupidly low res so it's completely pointless to bench at it.

Just noticed they are using the Cat 10.7 drivers for the 5970, isn't that the driver that broke crossfire scaling?

Techpowerup really need to get themselves sorted in regards to driver versions.

So shouldn't the 6970 be called a 5890 then? or are AMD allowed to use disproportionately high numbers?

Why? The 6970 is actually a new generation, it's not a card that was paper launched in 2009 and just now at the end of 2010 became feasible to actually make and release.

my 2 x 640mb WD Blacks 6gbs turn up tommorrow though for some raid 0 goodness

Why would you do that? 6Gb is useless for mechanical drives, you could have got 2 1TB F3s that will be the same speed and more space and likely cheaper.
