Linux Suse 10. Linux Login

On a toshiba satellite laptop

Ok iv installed all 5 disks how it told me to.

Now booting in failsafe mode, lists drivers ect.

"Welcome to Suse LINUX 10.0 (i586) - Kernal 2.6.12-15-smp (tty1).

Linux login."

I never set a login. :confused:

When it enter a user name, I cant enter a password, its just doesnt type it out.

CONFUSED!!

If i try to boot in normal mode I just get a black screen.

Just been reading some notes and screenshots of suse 10 install.

Bit different to what I got, apparently disks 2 ect are just ment to follow on from disk 1 like you would think (not for me) and then you are ment to set up user passwords ect....

Its late so ill do it 2moro.

Anyone got any info about laptops not working with linux?

Any slightly older laptop should work fine with Linux.
With regards to the login, did the installer prompt you to set a root password?
If not, then try logging in with user root & no password (Just press enter)
Linux is designed not to show the password as you type, to try & prevent people guessing the length of your password.

ok thanks ill try that when I finish collage today.

The thing is I havnt been asked by the menus to set up the networks ect and graphics.

So when it try load linux normaly i just get a black screen.

When installing disk1 should just run right onto disk 2 without a resart, correct?

Sagaboy2, you may be geeting a black screen because the graphics drives your system is loading are wrong for the system.

you could try pressing "Alt+F5" and see if you manage to get a CMD prompt.
Though i would probably be tempted to try a reinstall.

I think toshiba satellite laptop use SIS graphics drivers or at least the toshiba satellite laptop i tryed did

SuSE 9.3 restarts after disk1, then asks for disk 2. can't remember what 10 does, soz.

my laptop uses ATI graphics.

"the graphical interface could not be started

The required packages were not installed (minimal installstion) or the graphics card is not properly supports

As a fallback, the text font end of YaST will guide you through the installation."

So....yes ill need the drivers for it.

Been reading up, and it seems to be a toshiba laptop problem, something to do with ACPI or something like that and hyperthreading. :confused:

Installing the OpenSuSE Alpha 10.3 fixed my problems - I had the same thing on a laptop at work, editing xorg etc just wouldnt work.

iv tried the no ACPI thing and its installing fine atm.

What is ACPI

Im doing global update now so might have something in there that will help.

you could try,

log in as root. then the default password that you set when install linux. (if none then dont put anything)

type "init3"

that will load level 3.

then type "sax2"

sort out your graphics problem.

edit - as im in a rush atm that was all from memory (which is bad sometimes)

Thanks, I gave up in the end...attempted to reinstall the OS that can not be named in this place of linux, but linux had messed up all the partitions so had to use ghost and time to get it back on.

Ill read up in more detail on linux and maybe use a different OS other than suse, and wait till linux finishes the alpha that fixes toshiba problems and then maybe have dual boot, or go pure linux.
