Aiming to kill off FSR, XeSS and DLSS, Microsoft has created a universal super resolution built straight into DirectX and will discuss it at the next GDC

This could be used for both Windows and on the Xbox. We also know Microsoft is planning for Windows level integration and the user may very well be able to enable super resolution in any game and configure it from their windows display settings and likely a similar thing would be possible on the Xbox, giving it a big advantage over the PS5

A software solution so expect it to be very meh, may end up being better than FSR upscaling though.

I can't see there ever being any standard for upscaling etc. Nvidia are banking on their RTX feature set now as it really sets them apart as attested to by HUB etc. and AMD won't give up their FSR, same with intel and XESS. Same way UE TSR hasn't killed of upscaling in UE games.

DirectX RT works pretty well. It also uses whatever hardware features are available to accelerate work.

This might mean that whatever models a developer uses for machine learning based upscaling, it would end up being cross compatible. Might force AMD to put some TPUs or NPUs in their graphics cards.

Sony was also working on a proprietary super res + frame gen werent they? So they could get rid of AMD’s crappy FSR.

Playing FF XVI on ps5 is giving me headaches even in ‘graphics’ mode because of how ****** the image quality is ‘thanks’ to FSR.

Also doubt MS will kill anything considering DLSS is more than super resolution.

Yup Sony are looking into their own version. I suspect it will be very good given how their checkerboarding methods were second to none.

That is the rumour yes, that Sony is working on a proprietary super sampling system for its ps5 pro console

But we don't know why. It could be they want to claim the ps5 pro is an 8k console or that they want something to compete with directx super resolution because what Microsoft is doing for DirectX doesn't work on the PS5 and the majority of FSR implementations on the PS5 look awful because FSR sucks when the input resolution is too low which is the case for 90% of ps5 games so Sony needs a better upsampling method especially if they plan to upsample to 8k - can you imagine how bad 8k will look on FSR when it's using an input resolution of 720p lmao, it already looks like Vaseline just doing 720p to 4k on most ps5 games

PS5 is at least in its 2nd half of it's lifespan, Sony's own words.

Makes sense to "try it out" on the PS5 Pro model ready for the PS6 in 3-4 years time, get it refined as much as possible.

Microsoft: DirectX Super Resolution was developed with help and input from Nvidia and AMD. No mention of Intel having input

Reality is better than the rumours

DirectSR has been discussed in a Microsoft blog and it's not what we thought it was

We thought DirectSR was a new universal upscaling technology that is hardware agnostic and just upscaled all games

What DirectSR actually is, is an API addition to DirectX. The API operates with a fixed set of inputs and outputs that were agreed upon by Nvidia, AMD and Intel. All the game developer does is activate the DirectSR API code path and then DirectX will handle the input/output and unlock DLSS, FSR and XeSS upscaling options to gamer. DirectSR is a fixed mode, universal API that adds support to games for all upscaling technologies

So that's all it is, it's not a new upscaler that's going to kill dlss/fsr/xess, it's just an API that gives built in support for all these upscalers into DirectX and therefore makes it really easy to have all upscalers in your game - once a developer tries to put FSR in their game, the game will also have DLSS and XeSS, so the days of a games only having FSR or only having DLSS are coming to an end
