I sat at the end of last year in a bar in the alps and we were chatting bucket list things we'd love to do in life. A lot of mine is travel and experiences. One of which was my Arctic circle trip and some of them are huge things I never thought I'd do for a long time.

One of those things was buying an RX7 in Japan and driving it back to my home in France.

Something so out there, I didn't know how, but knew I wanted to try.

A few things since then changed and I was told I was facing almost certain redundancy at work and while I'd normally be thinking "****, I should look for another job..." I just thought, you know what? I think I want to just go on adventures in cars and create some content around there and see what happens. Hence the arctic thing came about.

For some reason since then, I posted a tiktok about buying an RX7 in Japan and driving it home because it's cheaper and chatgpt says it is... so I should do it. Which had a rather decent amount of reach (just over 600k across insta and tiktok at present) and I was like, you know what? I should just do it.

The only things holding me back were work and the self limiting belief that I could do it... but I know I can. Everything is work out able.

So I started to see if it was even possible.

It's 13,750km or there abouts. The route is subject to change based on so many factors and that's not even the hardest part (I'm sure many of you would disagree, cue "lol russia bla")

Buying a car in Japan isn't possible for a foreigner.

The reg plates are government owned and you need to have an address and parking place assigned.

Exports of cars are deregistered, so it's not possible to drive a japanese car out of japan, unless you have a japanese address.

This was my first problem to solve.

I knew I could BUY a car and have it exporting to France, that's simple. But, that isn't the mission. I'm not after simple, I'm after an adventure and to create an epic video series about this.

I thought it was a dead end until I spoke to the guy nextdoor who did all the paperwork on my range rover for me and he said it's no problem. I can get WW (temp plates) for france and drive it back on those. I'll have full paperwork for the car then, in my name.

Holy **** I might be able to do this?!

As the tiktok blew up a little, I had a comment on one of them from Top Rank Europe.

Now, Top Rank in Japan are one of the most well known exporters and all of the big youtubers use them. They have some of the most epic cars and some of the rarest JDM cars you can think of. They have a service that allows you to keep your car there, typically for US people, because of their 25yr rule, before they're allowed to import them into the US.

He shot me a message and I thought sweet, are you in south of france or somewhere like that? I should come and see you guys to chat.

He calls me up and tells me he's based 40min north of my house... what?!

I'm heading up to his next week to start the search for some JDM beauties.

He's going to not only help me source them in Japan, but so much more.

The PLAN?

Date: June 2025

I'm going to start to look for the cars now. I'm ready to buy as of now, but so many people say this takes some time to find the right ones.
This will start with a meeting with him next week.
I'm then going to go to Japan in June and he's going to put me in touch with all his people and contacts over there to see all of their stuff. That'll be the second part and we can discuss the work that will be done on the car prior to the trip.
I plan to have a rebuild done on the car over the 12 months between now and road trip time.
If it takes some time to find the car, that's also OK. I have time and I'm patient but knowing I'm having a rebuild done means I can wait a bit as well as go with a higher KM car if needs be.

I said "cars" not car. That's because I'm planning on picking up 2... maybe a 3rd if things line up right. The second is a Kei truck. Something like a Honda Acty as a support vehicle.

I've had hundreds of messages of people who want to come on this adventure, from producers to videographers to downright degenerates like me.

I'm going to start the process to look for those people later in the year which will include a whole meet and greet to make sure everyone passes that vibe check and is serious to commit to such a thing.

The 3rd car is a stretch goal. An R34 skyline.

Good road trip car :D and will allow more people to potentially come along for the ride. This depends on how things pan out for this adventure in the next 8 months really.

Next June my whole family is flying to Tokyo for a week family holiday.
Me and my son are staying on for a week in Japan to do some exploring on the roads there and create some content in Japan for a week.
Then, we'll get the Ferry with whoever is signed up at that point over to Russia to start the trip back.

Russian visas, contrary to popular internet belief, are not hard to get.

I spoke to someone who actually did the trip to Scotland from Japan (but was a Japanese resident so no issue with car papers) and said while people **** on the roads online, he drove them and they're totally fine.

My route as you get closer to Europe really depends on the state of play in certain places in the world. At present the Belarus borders (according to the internet) are unmanned and if you enter using them and don't get stamped you're illegally in the country which can lead to stuff I don't want to deal with.
The other option is going in via Georgia and Turkey.

But that arguably doesn't matter. It is all figure out able.

The fact is, I wrote the most insane notion out of something I would dream of doing and suddenly it all laid itself out for me in how to make it all a reality.

I can't wait to add this to the memory bank because what an experience.

I'll keep this updated as things happen, or you can follow the journey on insta/youtube/tiktok but I can't link it :D

And that's how the road to rotary came to be.

Couple of guys I know did a trip in the other direction a few years back - Drove a Yaris from the UK to Japan

That's my Monday Morning watching! Thanks!

Loads of people do self-promotion on here with their socials, I don't see why its being enforced now, unless its a new rule?

You can find me on yt @thersgarage tiktok is the same @ and insta, if that's your jam, is randomshenansgarage

My first thoughts were rotary specialist places might be a bit thin on the ground, and what is the range on an RX7?
Yea, zero specialists along the way. It's the very worst car to attempt to take but hey! It makes it the most interesting and that noise is just something else.

MPG is also not good. I mean... POOR! 15mpg?

The ways I'm going to try and make this easier on myself are: rebuild before it leaves Japan. Get it dialed in and given the best possible chance from the start, not straight out of an unknown auction and on the road. I'm also going to take a ton of premix for the fuel. Give the engine the best chance on the new build. On top of that I'll probably do a couple of oil changes along the route as well. Every 5k seems reasonable for that it is, which is a lot but again, let's give it the best possible chance I can and nothing like learning to change the oil on a rotary, than the middle of Mother Russia!

The fact that the Kei trucks top out at 70mph and that's MAX speed, means we'll no doubt cruise at 50-60mph where possible, so shouldn't be too mad on the thing.

I am also tempted to see if I can source a second engine while I'm there, just to bring along, not rebuilt, but just working. A bit of a get out of jail card, but also possible to rebuild when home and always have a spare one on hand.

So I'll do what I can to give myself the best chance, but at the end of the day I can always send the Kei truck off to find a total beater of a truck and tow bar to buy (trailer ideally) and we'll get her home somehow.

The internet is a funny old place, because you have the two sides of comments on socials. It's either, no ******* chance or hell yes, do it! The way I look at it is, it's all solvable stuff. Even in the most inconvenient of places and times. You just have to have people with you who are cool headed and just go with the flow as well. Which is going to make the whole selection process for this the hardest. In fact, someone suggested hosting a beers and BBQ for all those looking to come along. Which I think is a mega idea. Get to know people and see their commitment that way, too.

Anyway, this week I'm off to Colmar to get this search started! See what I can buy with my budget and work out how much it'll cost to rebuild and store until I need it!

This level of problem solving and shenanigans beats the **** out of problem solving in 2hr meetings at work :D

If it's being rebuilt then it just a normal (long) road trip, interesting, but not as socialmediary as ijustboughtthecheapestRx7inJapanomg
So you're saying for the lols and internet I should not rebuild it? :D

That's degenerate 101 right there.

Could I at least have a second engine rebuilt and bring that with me in the Kei truck? So if it does go we need to engine swap in the middle of nowhere? :D

I'd be more worried about making it through Russia in one piece than breaking down. You might not be allowed out at the other side.

Trying to get from that side of the world to Europe as a westerner now is so dangerous. It's all basically dictatorships and warzones.
I don't fear any of that to be honest. Aside from making sure I go through the right borders I'm allowed to and have the papers I need, the rest just doesn't phase me. I bet it'll all be fine.

I don't think I'd be up for doing most of the miles within Russia.

On the other hand, I can't imagine that Mongolia and Kazakhstan have the roads for an RX7 and you can't exactly do the route to the south of them.
I have the option of the two routes really. One is more interesting (via the stans) but also as you stated, not exactly RX7 friendly.
The stans route means more visas as well, so it might just be more russia. Again, will see how the whole thing pans out as I get into those details.

This sort of thing seems exciting on the face of it but I can't help but feel that 70% of the journey back would just be an extremely tedious week or two of driving through anonymous Russian 'countryside' with virtually nothing to see or do.
Totally with you on that. I think this is why it's important to have more than one car as well. A small bunch of you to make it what it is. It's about the common adventure together. I worked out we could aim for 5-6hrs driving a day and be at a decent timing without mashing ourselves. We would have to find places to stay along the route, meet people, generally just be open to what happens. Will some of that just be long ass stints of driving? Yea, probably.

Yep you won't be able to bodge it back together.
Like I said, there isn't anything that can't be figured out. Nothing.

I for one welcome having to try and find a Russian truck to buy to tow the RX7 somewhere :D

Sometimes not having everything figured out is the best part. Step into the unknown and see what comes from it. It's where some of the best things happen, but everyone is scared to problem solve, not know what to do, or just be completely out of their comfort zone. Why? Life is for living, not existing. You just have to step into the discomfort from time to time.

It sounds like full time work commitments won't be a factor by then but that seems like a long stretch away from the family.
Yea, totally. So to combat this the family are coming to Japan for a week just before the trip and hopefully can meet us (in nicer places than maybe bleak Siberia) along the way when we hit more mainland europe.

Fortunately I am single and have a great relationship with my ex and she fully supports my windmilling into this. Not something she would have done when we were together, for sure.

In a bizarre turn of events (I have said that far too many times about how things have currently unfolded, but you know) I thought yesterday that I should look into some sponsors for the whole series and trip. I have the time and it could really help for many reasons haha

I had a couple in mind, but one of them being HKS, probably the biggest japanese car part company. So I dropped a couple of emails off yesterday. One to HKS and one to JAL (a ticket sponsor would be great so I could go back and forth a couple of times between now and then :p) and went to bed.

I woke up this morning to this:
hks.jpg

I'm now chatting to my man at HKS about how they can support the series! Madness.

It'll be an adventure, that's for sure! Is the plan to try and make a break into the Youtuber thing as a career? It seems very corporate now which makes it that bit harder to get traction but on the flipside makes individuals / small teams content that much more interesting.

What even is a career for me right now?! Ha!
It's for sure not easy in any way and I think that there are so many people doing things online and with creating content, it makes it even harder to find your audience. There is a lot of noise. I think this for me is why it's important to know what you want to create and share.

I'm going to give it a go when I can be more full time on it (hopefully soon) and utilise all the channels I can, such as instagram, tiktok, facebook and youtube. Try and see if it's possible to invest in myself and the idea and really see where it can go.

I'm 38 and 1/3rd and I figure that I have hated corporate for so long, I just keep thinking it'll be different this time and go back like I have amnesia and still hate it. Money is great, but it's soul sucking and it batters me mentally.

Planning these sorts of trips is like a business. It's the planning, the marketing strategy, content planning, costings, business development in potential sponsors, filming, editing, researching. It's everything all at once with no creative bounds and no time waste of filling in SOPs because some suit **** tells you to.

I have so many ideas for these sorts of trips. If it works out and can make some revenue, it'll go right back into the next mental idea and I'll jump right into that one and see where the world takes me.

I saw something very similar to this on Instagram the other week. Something along the lines of RX7s are £40k, or you can pick one up cheap in Japan and drive it back. It sounds amazing. Best of luck with the 'project'. I'll be keeping an eye on it.
That was my video

It's a cool idea. If it was a YouTube series I'd definitely be interested in watching it unfold.
It for sure will be!

Worth remembering that your bank card likely won't work in Russia. If you're carrying cash, keep 2 wallets on you: one with the real money in, and one with only bribe money and no more. Then if you get pulled over you can show the policeman your otherwise empty wallet (minus the bribe) and hope he goes away.
Ill have to check revolut and see what works, otherwise I'll have rubels or whatever they take to get me by! I heard a lot about having some cash aside for russia is generally a good shout.
I suppose to get from Japan to Europe on land you have to go though at least one trash country whatever direction you choose, so Russia is probably the least worst choice of the crap countries in fairness.

Yea, can't avoid it and I think it'll be OK! I am quite looking forward to seeing what the reality is tbf! See if it's as it's portrayed...

I just met with Top Rank over here. He's writing up the contract, I'm paying a 5k deposit and we're on! The search is starting.
They're going to source the car, keep the car and do work on the car for me. They said they'd waive the storage fees for me to be a part of the project, which is nice. That's 3.5k saved lol :D

They also said that there is an event they hold in Jan at Fuji raceway with a super small guest list (which includes a ton of the people I watch online, which is so ******* mad) and they'd like to get me along to that in Jan if I plan one of my trips over there inline with that.

The whole thing is mental really. In like 6 weeks it's gone from posting a video randomly online to being supported by arguably the biggest name in japanese car exports and one of the biggest Japanese car part companies in HKS, and being invited to events where insanely huge creators I've watched for years are... and then me?!

It's a bit surreal to be honest but I'm just rolling with it and look forward to how much more crazy things are going to get.

The search has begun!

Wait...June 2025? It's going to take 13 months to find a car and plan this road trip? You can't wet our appetites with such lush content and then deliver such time frames man come on!
With the way it has to be to be able to make it possible legally, it's what I have to work with. I'll be going to Japan a couple of times between now and then, but finding the car and doing the rebuild will take 5-6 months alone.

So in the meantime I'll go back and forth and enjoy what I can out there, too.

Spoke to them today and they were so nice and really excited about the series. Said they'd be honored to work with me on the project and I was like seriously WTF is happening? I was there, little old me going, it's a dream to be able to buy an RX7 these days, it's also a dream to drive it back and have this adventure and now it's serious madness to even consider having a company like HKS sponsoring the whole thing.

They said that to have two japanese cars in an RX7 and Kei truck driving across continents would be an amazing things to see and to be a part of, so yea, looks like I'll be having HKS stickers slapped down the side of my car for this one.

I'm going to be visiting their factory in Jan when I head over there, they want to show me around and introduce me to everyone. They were super friendly about everything.

They're providing me with the HKS Hipermax R coilover setup and we're discussing whether they can wangle an intercooler and a GTIII-4R single turbo setup for cooling and reliability. Will see how I get on with that

It's so mad though to see all these huge names with HKS on their cars and then some total bell from England is going to have the same. All a bit mind blowing really.

Can't wait to see where this all goes!

Imagine making it all that way (unlikely you'll even get in to Russia) and then being turned back at the Georgian border, or is there an assumption Putin will be gone before next summer and Russia will be in the hands of a western friendly democrat?
I'm glad you have done so much research into this trip and not just sat listening to the news.

You never know, you might even be able to think for yourself at one point.

Handbags!

The Georgian border, in fact any Russian border situation will remain fluid whilst the "SMO" is happening and/or Putin is in power.

My point is, good luck, I think you would need it to complete a trip like that.

I fully hope if you manage to do it you have a great time.
Thanks man, appreciate it!
