Which Linux

hey,
Im doing a project at college at the moment which consists of setting up a server, now the server software at my college is quite old. I have decided i wish to install a server at home, is their a Linux version that would be up to the job or am i a complete fool? Also would it be possible to install it onto a usb 2.0 drive?

Creating users and groups like in active directory?
Shareing files
That sort of thing.

debian + samba would probably be upto the job.
