Trying to decide between these 2 cards. Which one would be best for me. The system will be a core duo with 1Gb RAM, and running Windows XP.

I like gaming, but am not a hard core gamer. I would also like to play HD content from PC through to Plasma TV.

I have found the 7900 GS for £68 and the 8600GT for £63. Both are 256Mb versions.

Well looking at "tomshardware guide" for grahics cards, it shows the 7900gs at 1280 x 1024 stomping all over the 8600gt in gaming in all games except oblivion, so for gaming, theres your answer. With regards to HD content playback I don't know, but I would assume the 8600 would be better being a newer card but don't take that as gospel. I'd wait and see if anyone else has any oinions.

I had to choose between the two last week. I landed up buying an XFX 7900GS XXX over the 8600GT. Certainly don't regret it. Have mine overclocked to 620MHz Core, 1800MHz Mem and I'm getting about 5,800 in 3dmark06. :)

got 2 7900gs SLI and the graphic's are excellent running the core @630 mem @1600
with out any problems I think that the 7900gs is a work horse and worth the money. what about an ATI 2600 these are top cards for the money OCUK has a good selection.

cheers

Are the x1950 better than the 2600 as the 2600 has faster core speeds and faster mem speed than the x1950, I'm not trying to prove a point but I dont know much about the x1950 cards,

x1950 620MHz Core, 1480MHz Memory, 36 Pixel Shaders, 8 Vertex Shaders, 8

ATI 2600 800MHz Core, 256MB 2200MHz GDDR4 Memory, 120 Stream Processors,

Are 36 pixel shaders better than 120 stream processors "not to sure about stream processors compaired to pixel shaders how do they differ?"

cheers

be warned, the 79series has very high failure rate. i would have gone with the 8600gt or the x1950pro just for additional reliability sake.

pro should beat 2600 unless you cannot live without dx10 which is not really the case with any present game afaik

nice, i have a xfx standard 7900 GS (450/1320) and I over clocked the core to 525 and got 4550 on 3dmark 06

Ive got one of OCUK's 1950PROs and it certainly does the job! Oblivion looks stunning, and it runs Bioshock on good settings. It is a fantastic stop-gap for a year or a year and a half until I go DX10, and at £70 I have no complaints!

My 7900GS could reach 670/900 with some of the very simple pencil volt mods out there. Definitely worth it. If I hadn't knocked a resistor off it then I wouldn't have needed to upgrade for quite a while =)
