Lordrobs.... making even the most basic task difficult

Right my bulbs were a nasty shade of yellow so I treated myself to a set of Philips x-treme power ones. Great.

It was blowing a gale when I fitted them and after the third time my bit of kitchen roll I was using to pick up/hold the bulbs blew off up the street I decided to slap on a pair of latex gloves.

Only now, a good 11 or so hours later, I'm wondering if the dust from the gloves is going to be a problem on the bulbs themselves?

I'm 97% sure its the grease and oils that your skin secretes that causes the problem and that a bit of chalk/talc dust isn't going to be a problem. Just looking for confirmation :o



... and yes I do fail, quite possibly in an epic manner :o

I stuck them on once I'd fitted one side and the are certainly much whiter than the old bulb, but it was blazing sunshine so hard to tell what the actual output was like. I'll let you know when I've tried them at night down the county roads :p

I did try and only touch the metal bit even with my gloved up hands.




On a completely unrelated topic I ragged the vRS properly for the first time today. Its taken me a whole month :o
 
I've handled halogens with bare fingers by the glass before and it's never affected them adversely. I think it's when you've got really greasy dirty fingers it gets all over the glass and kills them :)

Got a hole in one headlight which lets water and muck in, only just got a mention at the MOT but it's had the same filthy bulb for over a year and it's fine.

LOL, last thing I need is to be spending more money :p

To be fair there are two things putting me off-

1) My car tends to get a hard life. 2.5 miles to work, plus I come home for lunch so thats 4 cold starts over just 10 miles of driving if I'm just in the office*. I'd be worried about the extra strain the remap puts on everything.

2) The increased insurance cost over the next 4 years or so. I will look into this before renewal but at the moment Privilege are giving me a fantastic price with free unlimited business use. Problem being they aren't mod friendly.

I wouldn't rule it out but I'd need to put these concerns to rest first.

Philips x-treme power... Are they like OSRAM Silverstars but with extra lumens?

Basically yes. The OSRAMS are meant to put out an extra 50% light on the road compared to normal bulbs. These are meant to put out an extra 80% compared to standard, and tests say that figure might even be conservative :eek:

These are meant to get VERY hot in use though but I'm sure I'm worrying about nothing as usual :o As I say I may not have even touched the glass as I was trying to be careful when fitting them even though I had gloves on.



*before anyone says bike down I considered it but people drive like plums down that road, even with its blind bends. I just wouldn't feel safe doing it.

I can well believe that - standard car bulbs are pretty low performance/high lifespan type bulbs.

They are always making improvements in halogen bulbs despite HIDs. I'll have to give them a whirl, as you can never have enough light at night. :) Let us know how they compare - I imagine they'll have a better colour temperature (whiter light) than standard bulbs also, if they run hotter than normal bulbs.

EDIT: Just noticed in yer original post that you said yer old bulbs were pretty yellowy. If the new bulbs turn out to be yellowy also, you might have a some resistance in yer wiring loom causing voltage drop - don't worry if you don't know what that means, there's quite an easy fix for it. :)

Yes they do make a nice amount of light really, I use to have 50% brighter for main beams aswell but that keeps overloading my electronics. :p Will try to get a pic tonight of my bulbs.
