Trying to install BT Broadband and a BT Voyager 105 USB ADSL Modem for a friend.

When either running the BT setup disk or trying to install the drivers for the modem its telling me :-

"A previous BT Voyager modem installation has been detected. This must be uninstalled before the current installation can continue".

It then tells me to unplug the cable from the modem and restart the PC.

I do so and every so often after restarting it pops up with :-

"Error loading newdev.dll"

and then

"Administrator privileges are required to install, uninstall or configure the DSL software".

Run the setup disk and it goes through it and near the part when you install the drivers, a box pops up in Windows XP saying the same about the Administrative privileges thing.

There is only one user on the PC and when going to "Manage, Groups" etc it shows that Admin privileges are in place for that user.

This continues round and round in a circle and I'm not getting anywhere at all with it.

Could really do with some advice on this, mate needs to be online ASAP and he's looking to me to get him there!!!. I thought it would be a simple case of running the setup disk and plugging the modem in like I have done many times before with these USB Voyagers.

HELP!!!!! :(

Anyone?. :(

I'm sure its got something to do with this "Error loading newdev.dll" thing but even Googling it comes up with not much info.

I aint been funny but you should have left it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Make sure you are logged in as an administrator, and then look in the control panel for and modem software installed.

I am very suprised if you get any help in this thread as it could be millions of problems causing this and only somebody locally could sort this problem.

Download the drivers here from AOL and instructions here, http://info.aol.co.uk/help/members/broadband/installguides/v105.html

Your friend is probably better off buying a cheap router with ethernet ports.

LOL!!! :p

I've already tried the latest drivers. I am logged on as Admin and I've checked the control panel, network connections and scoured the registry for anything relating to the BT drivers each time I attempt to reinstall them. Carrying out a system restore allows the driver install process to attempt to get somewhere, but again, near the end, the above errors/problems/issues, whatever you want to call them, crop up.

Installing drivers for a USB modem "should" be a walk in the park, I've done it loads of times before without any hassles.

However the problem here doesnt appear to be anything with the drivers, per sae, its related to this ridiculous notion that Windows has that there's no Admin logged on as well as the newdev.dll error.

This is the only thing stopping me getting anywhere, its not that I've not got a clue how to set up a simple USB modem and broadband connection, thats the easy part.

So whats your next step then clever boy? ....

You mentioned no aspect of how much IT knowledge you know so how am I supposed to go off your post?......

Then just format, or tell him to get a router. As there is probably no quick fix.

Andrew, I run a small part time business in IT and web developing alongside my full time job.

My knowledge is pretty good.

The problem as I said, is the "Error loading newdev.dll" & "Administrator privileges are required to install, uninstall or configure the DSL software".

This is the first time I have came up against an issue such as this, hence the reason for fishing for info.

Try Googling "Error loading newdev.dll" and you will see how little info there is to go by in connection with USB modems. Whatever hardware the error pops up in conjunction with it appears to be one that as you say, there is no easy fix for.

A reformat seems a bit drastic however if it fixes the issue then so be it.

@J.B. Yes, your correct, a router would be an easy option and one I was considering. A Voyager 105 is certainly "old hat" by todays standards anyway so it is certainly an option worth considering.

The OS is XP Pro+SP2.

Well whatever you do good luck to ya, I know it's a pain but when problems like this occur usually it would be best to format because theres more than likely theres more problems than just this one.

Yep, the Administrator value is set at 1.

One thing I havent tried and its just came to mind, is Right clicking the BT .exe file and "Run as" Administrator.

Wont be able to do that till I go back over to the guys house start of next week.

Hi

With the 105 sometimes the unistall throws a wobbly. Do you have the original driver CD as there should be a fiel on the CD in the root directory called DR105 you need to run this as it is a removal tool.

If you need the CD let me know as I have a couple knocking around and can post to you if needs be.

Click the "Find VX2.betterinternet info" button to make sure that you don't have this adware. If there are no files listed, go on to the last step. If you find the adware files, (it is usually 3 random named dll files) Select all the files found.

Press 'Delete These Files'. The program will delete all files but one that will be deleted on reboot. Allow program to reboot. Once Restarted:

Press 'Guardian.reg'.
Press 'User Agent'.
Press 'Restore Policy'.
Clicking on "find vx2.BetterInternet info" again should show all fields blank.
If you have no adware files, just click on the "Restore Policy" Button
