Hello!

Taken quite an interest into the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions. To be more specific the Evo 6.

My question is, what is available in the 6 series? By far the best looking Evo :D , really has good character :) .

I know they have a GSR and a TME but what else do they have, ups and downs, I know that they like a bit of oil and petrol but that aside :p . How do they compare to the Subaru?

Cheers,

Ben.

I think there was an Evo 6 RS as well as the time..? Although do not quote me on that. Compared to UK scoobs of the time, it kills them - which is why so many people over here think that Evos are so much better. The model that compares to an Evo 6 is probably an Impreza STi 5 or 6. Comparing them is hard, but a lot of people tend to go for the Scoobs, as they are a lot less money to keep serviced etc. Evos are great, but I don't think I could do the 4500 mile service intervals !

Edit - forgot to say, I think the Evo 6 RS was just a lightweight version that was used mainly as a base for a Group N rally car, in the same way that the Spec C Impreza is.

Isn't that a perpetual argument? You'll need to drive both and see which one rings your bell. I drove an Evo6, some time ago now, and it was fast but harsh. In fact it really put me off ever owning that sort of car. I'd rather have slightly less performance with at least some refinement.

Also consider E36 M3 or perhaps Audi S4 for similar money.

look on lancerregister

buying an evo isnt something to be taken lightly. In terms of the subaru v evo debate

Evo is the more capable car, but more flawed because of it. Subaru nearly as good, but much better all rounded and easier to live with

Also beware the evo service schedule, approx every 3k miles. they're very fussy about oil.

Not sure what to make of that!

evo as hardcore weekend car

subaru as daily driver

you have to be a very dedicated sort to own an evo as a daily driver. They're quite hard riding for a start.

Bloke at work however, has an Evo 9 FQ360 and wouldnt have anything else

its a personal thing. Suggest you do a lot of reasearch, as i mentioned, start at lancerregister.

So were XR3i's.

Never heard of that model.

Given the nature of both cars I'd wager they're both tiresome to own as daily drivers but I'm sure people can live with them. I doubt there's a vast enough difference between the two to call the Mitsubishi a weekend car only though.

Mate has an FQ340 (I think it is) its his only car and his daily driver, doesn't have any problem with it, i've been in it and its perfectly fine and comfy.

Don't know why you think an Evo is only a weekend car????

This is what I'm thinking. The Evo6 I drove was harsh but you could cope with it. I'm sure there's far worse cars out there that would get on your nerves in a short space of time.

I've just looked it up. Holy mother, what a machine. I wonder how it fares against the previous FQ400 in terms of drivability?

much better my mate tells me

the evo 9 has MIVECS variable valve timing, which makes the turbo lag of the Evo 8 FQ400 a thing of the past.

the 9 360 is allmost lag free. Still pestering him to give me a passenger ride !

like i said its personal. My mate at works loves his, but his brother hates it as its too hard riding for him. Im onlt going on what ive read and been told, but they all seem to tally. That the evo is the more focused car, but more hard edged because of it. and "weekend car" is just a euphamism for a car that perhaps you wouldnt want to drive all the time. I know my mate at work finds his quite hard to live with, but at the same time wouldnt want anything else

I'm sure the 9 is a better ride than the previous versions but I've personally no idea as the 6 is the only Evo I've driven. However, I have spent some time in a Fiesta RS Turbo and when it comes to rough, the Fiesta tops the lot [it was a thrashed example mind]. The Evo felt like a Rolls in comparison.

@ The original poster: First things first, ring round for insurance. You're a puppy at 20 years old and when getting quotes for Evo's you'll probably still hear the insurance broker laughing long after you've put the phone down.

Edit: forgot, the Fiesta was bad but my '88 Montego MG Turbo, despite being faster, was much worse.

At 20 years old you will have a very hard time with insurance for any Evo. I am 22 with four years driving experience, three years no claims bonus and for an Evo 5/6 I got a quote of £2005.

They are one of the most expensive cars to insure before you get to supercar/proper sports car territory. Evos and M3s always come out high for me :(

20 yr old and an EVO? Be prepared to be laughed at. The premium will say no way your having one.

I would estimate £3-4k+. £2k if your lucky and live on a private island.

Was quoted £1k living in the middle of nowhere, full ncd, 35 yrs old.
