What are these types of pictures called....?

Hello

A long time ago I remember seeing pictures of this type...



...where is you stared long enough you would see a 3D type of image within it.

But I can't remember if they had a general name that they were known as...?

Also does anyone know if there are any others to download anywhere...?

Grr I can't do these... I start to see things, outlines etc but never manage to get to the point where I can tell what it is.
 
While you're looking at it, just relax your eyes. After a bit of practise you'll be able to control them better.

I can move mine independantly, so I find it quite easy. Just takes a few seconds to focus.
 
ye just a pattern of colours to me, can never seen anything :(

just end up squinting at it forever like the kid in "mall-rats"

How many of you who CAN'T do these but CAN do cross eyes?

Can you cross your eyes ?

If so i find the easiest way to do these pictures is ever so slowly cross your eyes while looking at them. Then straighten them out slowly again.

Do that a few times and you'll lock onto the 3d image.

Give it a try.

You will get the nack of what i mean in seconds. I can lock onto any of them images within 1-2 seconds doing the above.

When you do that and look at something how does your brain / you assimilate what you are seeing without it becoming all messed up...??

Stereograms...!!!! That was the word I was searching for, thanks glitch :)
 
If you cross your eyes the image is inverted! You have to relax your eyes so they cross the other way and then you can see the 3d image as it is supposed to be.
 
I can do them, made a thread with loads in quite a while ago. No chance am i going to look at it now though. Hangover from hell!
 
My main problem with these is my eyes just start watering when I try to stare at it, so then I have to blink and lose focus. Grrr.

No you don't, crossing your eyes works perfectly well, there's a shape of a flower in the image and it's the right way up.
 
I think they're called JPEGS :D

Seriously now, I can't do them... I lack stereopsis, which also means I have no binocular depth/distance perception. Wooooh.
 
I can get Magic eye pictures instantly. Hell, I can get alomost anything to go 3d on me, eg Bathroom radiator, desktop icons, my mixing desk.

Never been able to go boz-eyed though.

I'm exactly the same, anything with a pattern I can make go 3D.

You don't cross your eyes you relax your eyes - its like crossing the opposite way.

The trick I used at work was to put glass in front of the pictures.
I then told people to concentrate on the reflection of a light somewhere behind them.
Basically if you're standing 2 foot from the picture you need to concentrate on a point 2 foot behind it.
