Gibson questions

What the hell?

Why are you acting like such an ********?

You were undermining me with the use of your provocative emoticons, right? The ol wink in the eye to give you the high ground, yes? If not, apologies, taken out of context. Either way, i have played through the best amps on the planet on stage, strats are better for clean, les pauls are better for distortion, i'm a distortion man, myself. If i use cleans, i'll use an acoustic guitar stand/mount, through an appropriate amp.

Oh, but truly, it can't be helped, Carling. These figures of authority, forcing their profound wisdom on me with their tactical weapons (emoticons), how am i possibly anything but at their mercy? I was just trying to give the op some insight to my decision in buying a les paul over a strat. It really does depend what genres you're most interested in playing, and how much money you have to maintain a guitar of great expense. Gibson refret jobs e.t.c aren't cheap. I ment no offense by my original post, perhaps just some die hard start fans. I love acoustic guitars by the way. i have a deposit on a taylor Gs6, something to behold, truly.

Edit: Seems theres a light and dark side, what stance do les pauls an strats take, hmmm. There are bad strats and bad les pauls, my les paul is nothing short of perfect. I've played a lot more expensive, Prs McCarty brazalian rosewood models for example, the extra £££ isnt well spent, anyone with a pair of ears could say as much. Prs seem to be the main competition to the les paul sound, and whilst they far surpass gibson in beauty, they fall short where it really counts.

In reality unless you are a total "guitar to amp fx free" purist then even the top Epiphone LPs sound very close to the LP standard if you have some effects thrown into the mix. The same is said for the Mexican and Standard US strats and so on.

Can't compare a PRS SE to a PRS though but a £1400 PRS to a £6000 RPS isn't so different.

It takes an exceptional guitarist to get the most out of a £1300+ guitar where the diminishing returns on the actual increase in performance/sound/playability vs ££££ spent really comes into play.

Spending anymore comes down to having, £££££ in your wallet, Sponsorship/pro musician, just wanting to have an uber guitar (ego?? maybe) or possibly a specific sound from a proper vintage guitar.

Acoustics are a bit different where imo there is greater disparity between £££ spent and sound and playability simply becasue of the nature of the instrument and the "clean sound" output. Again this can depend on brand.

My personal experience with Gibsons is that you are paying a huge fat wad for the name, but I think that about a lot of American guitars. My friend who used to work in Sound Control had a Swamp Ash Studio, after hearing it and playing it, I agree with him that you deserve more guitar for the money. He recently sold it and he had it for less than a year.

I have a 1986 Les Paul that needs a lot of work doing on it before its playable but once it's finished it should be a decent guitar. The only reason I have it however is because I didn't pay for it, I got given it and when i'm finished, it isn't going to sound like a Gibson Les Paul.

At the end of the day though its the sound you like and if a Gibson is the sound you want you just have to decide if it is worth the money after trying out everything else.

Well, my short-term solution has been a bit of a strange step.

I've bought a Yamaha SG700s until the time comes when I can afford my big purchase.

I'll plonk some pictures up shortly so that you can all see what it's like, and I do actually like it despite not really liking Gibson SGs.

I've seen a picture of DMPoole's Yamaha SG2000 and was quite impressed with how it looked different enough from a Gibbo for me to like it.

So there we have it. :)

I must admit that I don't know the SG700s, I do know that Yamaha have some of the best and most consistent QC around though :)

Glad you're happy.

Now let's see it!
