So, what do you reckon this tweak is?

I use Ultimate Defrag as my defragger. I find it does everything I need without being bloated.

I just visited the website and the owner is also hawking a pdf doc that claims to “Improve Your Hard Drive File Access Performance By 40% Without Spending a Penny On Software Or Hardware”.

And, "It's a Feature Already Built Into Windows Vista, XP, NT, 2000
Hardly anyone uses it! There's a function already there in the NT File System (NTFS), the file system used by all Windows Operating systems which, thanks to the modern day processor - even entry level ones - actually increases your hard drive file access performance."

Here is a link to these giddy claims. What tweak do you reckon it is? Apparently, its 2 words and an acronym, but I'll be damned if I'm paying $7.50 to find out!

It's probably just dicking around with the prefetcher. Windows tweaks aren't worth the hassle, Microsoft know what default settings work best with their OS, I've no idea why people try to second-guess (by screwing with the page file for example).

I agree its probably exagerated but I'm still vaguely intrigued as to what the actual tweak is. It can't be "dicking around with the prefetcher", as win 2k didn't have a prefetch feature.

Because 'screwing' with the page file actually makes a difference.

Its a little naive to think that MS knows best, considering their OS's are built, by default, to run generically.

Changing things like pagefile size/locations, temp file locations, service settings, ect; allows us to customise the OS towards OUR computers, and thus improving performance/stability/fragmentation/ect;. Hence why things like pagefile & service settings are different per computer.

If MS knew better as you so claim, then why is the UPS service enabled by default on all XP installs, considering that so few people actually have a UPS! ;)

For those of you still hankering suspensefully for the answer to this most vexed of questions I can now reveal the answer:

NTFS Compression

I kid you not. It is all about NTFS compression and claiming that, with text files, you can gain access speeds up to 500% greater than what you would normally get. I'm glad I didn't fork out for that!
