Chipset Fan Removal (Asus A8Ne)

What have you tried?

Normally you would have to remove the mobo from the case and use a pair of needle-nose pliers to squeeze the two pegs through, it should be a little sticky because of the thermal compound but not *welded* on.

I guess it may help if the board had been used/put under load a little while before you dismantled the system as this would have made the thermal goo a little softer maybe?

your chipset fan going on it by any chance? Iave had mine now for about a year and abit, and mine is on its way out.

Just for the record you can get a replacement fan:

I have also used a Zalman ZM-NB47J Northbridge Cooler if the system has Graphics card with a single slot cooler or a Thermalright HR-05 (IFX) SLI Northbridge Chipset Heatsink for systems that have a graphics card with a dual-slot cooler.

Has anyone used the Zalman ZM-NB47J Northbridge Cooler and bent the pins out of the way so it can be used when you have a dual slot graphics card? I'm thinking of doing this but would like to see how someone else has done it first.

My stupid little chipset fan is making a very loud noise sometimes and i have already had to replace it once. I am fed up of this crummy little chipset coller ASUS supply.

My a8n-e's chipset fan keeps huge noise and I earlier I bought zalman ZM-NB47J nb cooler but had to remove it cause my 8800 gts was too big. Now ordered Thermalright HR-05 which should fit with my gfx card..

i bought mine B-Grade from Overclockers, do you think Asus would just tell me to sod off if i wanted a new fan?

@ the person who asked if the fan went, yeh it would randomly not work, id have to keep re booting the pc or open it up and give it a nudge to get it started.

apparently asus sometimes offer a free fan but not always, and they can take a while.

i fitted the Northbridge Cooler, i found it on a well known competitors website, at a Very competative price ;)

i couldnt be happier with the fan-less cooler now, my pc is soo much quiter its unreal, thanks for all the help :)

edit - be careful if you order the Northbridge Cooler, you need a bit of space for it to fit so if you have a bit graphics card or an artic cooler then it probably wont fit (ive had to go back to the standard gfx card cooler)

yeah it works well. I tested it running *passive* and the system was stable etc but when I felt how hot the blue zalman heatsink was I decided to position a 120mm Sharkoon 1000 fan over it suspended on a Zalman fan bracket.

I bought a little LCD digital thermometer and that showed me the heatsink was running at about 65°C running passive and this dropped to about 40°C when cooled. For the record I tested the A8N-SLi Premium which as u know has a little heatpipe cooler but still that was running extremely hot, measured about 50°C.

I think I'm gonna grab one of those ANTEC 'Spot Coolers'.

Hmm, I remember the days of a noisy Asus fan. I couldn't be arsed taking the mobo out of the case again so I just yanked it out with brute force. Luckily it didn't bugger anything up.

Has anyone got a picture of the Thermalright HR-05 installed on a ASUS A8N-E or similar motherboard? And how cool does this thing keep the chipset?

looking to replace the fan on my A8N-E too since its becoming a media box. The thermalright HS is a little expensive though.. any cheaper northbridge coolers out there for dual slot graphics cards?

that sounds the same to what i do. its a real pain in the bum isnt it! - but in a months time or so i think iam going to do full comp upgrade so i will just leave it till then.

I'm using a Thermalright HR-05 on an RDX200 cf-dr, the northbridge is located right after the primary grafics card slot and used to get to 55+ degree's C in winter, the Thermalright HR-05 was the only cooler i could find which would fit around the graphics card, only gets to 52 in summer with the fans switched off, quite a good solution. You need to remove the motherboard from the case to fit it though.

I might be installing one the next couple of days so I'll try and get some snaps. For the record the Thermalright heatsink fits fine on the A8N-E although the SLI version gives you scope for a dual-slot graphics card.
