PS3 as DVD/Blueray playback machine

PS3 is rated quite highly as BD player, OK its not the best and its a bit more thirsty and noisy say then one of £1000+ ones but not so it distracts you (IMO).
It has many features that several high end players dont have, and more can be added with a system software update, like they did when they added the upscaler and 1080P/24fps support.

Cheapest thing is to get a Blu-Ray reader for your PC (£150 odd) and connect that to your TV.

Easily done.

One thing i wondered about PC BD drives is that how do they cope with the HDCP protection if you dont have a video card with HDMI out? As i didnt think BD will allow 1080/720P over a component connection, not sure about DVI though?

Don't you need a pretty damn good spec pc though to play Bluray HD material?

My pc may be getting a bit old now, but it's still pretty quick and that struggles with some Hi-def material let alone Bluray quality.

shop around as you can pick up a second hand PS3 for about £300. I think it still comes in cheaper than a standalone BD player too.

The usual PS3 trolls cant help themselves with this one, perhaps we can have a special forum for Neocon and Jihad to ply their misinformation.

The PS3 is an excellent blu-ray player, whether its worth buying for blu-ray alone with the current titles are out just now is another matter.

Its an excellent upscaling DVD player, the only thing that would really make it a perfect player is an actual display on it, but its a very minor point against it.

Agreed on all accounts, For 300 quid, you are not going to get a bluray player that matches it. The DVD upscaling is fantastic. And you also have the added bonus that it plays games! OMG :p

On a side note, How many strikes do these blatent trolls get before a suspension kicks in? Neocon must be high ranking by now.

The PS3 has definately gotten better because of firmware updates, so yes, worth the £300 pricetag :)

DVD upscaling is good, but not as good as a standalone player.. but as I say this is likely to improve as more firmware is released.

If you fancy a dabble with a game or two in the future then it's a no-brainer.

The PS3 currently beats all stand alone BR players in respect if its support for 1.3a.

As mentioned earlier - since all the firmware updates the PS3 is held as a very capable player. The only complaints I've heard are no remote.

What TV and Hi Fi awarded it 5 stars this month in its HD DVD Vs Blue Ray show down article.

Worth mentioning you can buy a remote for it...
