Pro Evolution Soccer 2008: 360 or PS3

This is Football on the PS2 had diving and it was brilliant - altho if you were good it was too easy to get away with it (use defender to block refs view)...

unfortunately it was the same button as 2-foot challenge so if you lost the ball JUST before diving you would accidentally rape the defender with a 2-footer and get sent off lol!! massive fun tho!

You could have said exactly the same thing about CD at the start of the PS2's lifecycle, but it didn't take long before DVD was needed for the extra space.

I think that MS were very short sighted by sticking to DVD for this generation of consoles, especially so considering every system doesn't have a HDD.

CD was already too small by the time the PS2 came along. The Dreamcast had been using 1GB GD-ROMs for a year or so before it's arrival.

i'm more interested in nice graphics and gameplay, than watching cut scenes

you don't need more than a DVD for great graphics as 'Gears' demonstrates.

easy enough to force users with core to buy the HD, or suffer massively cut down features.
Nintendo did it with the N64 in the form of the RAM expansion thing.
It became somewhat required for some big games late in the N64s life.
So cant really see why MS wouldnt do this kind of thing on 360 =)

I'd rather play a brilliant short game than a long average one. Max Payne 2 is one of my favourite games of all time, that was short.

That wasn't my point, I too love short games as long as they are great like GoW was. But for longer games how are they going to fit all on to a DVD and maintain the same graphical quality as Gears for example?

We see it everytime, developers getting more and more on a disc, the PS2 is a brilliant example of this. If push comes to shove, use 2 discs.

Everything has its limits, eventually they're going to have to sacrifice some video or audio to fit it all in or as you mention

use 2 discs.

This is fine for relatively linear games such as Blue Dragon, but for open games ie. GTA or Oblivion how is it going to work? Some users such as me won't be happy if you have to change disc whenever you travel to a different island/city.

Are Oblivion and Grand Theft Auto not big enough? I've discussed here several times that a game as large as Oblivion or GTA wouldn't be much bigger on Blu-Ray due to system limitations.

Not sure what you mean, I'm asking how are they going to advance the graphical quality of games without resorting to inconveniencing the user and using multiple discs.

They've already shown they need 3 DVDs for Blue Dragon, but what will happen with other games where multiple discs aren't an option? Will the graphical quality just hit a brick wall?

They could have quite easily got away with one disk on Blue Dragon by having the cut scenes rendered in real time, rather than having to store loads of Hi Def video.

Besides, with that sort of game it wouldn't feel right to not have to change the disk. :p

They start optimising things better for the console and figure out new tricks etc.

Like the other guy said, PS2 is a good example of this.
Im sure hard-drives will become standard for larger games or something..
I dont get why they were not anyway, they load faster etc, remove the arguement for people wanting to make backups of their games incase discs scratch..

But Oblivion did fit on one disc as will Mass Effect.

Obviously that isn't an option as not everyone has a hard drive on their 360.

I'm talking about in say 18 months time when graphics have advanced more and will take up more storage space.

We are getting better at new graphical techniques, utilising better shaders to improve visual quality etc.. The compression of said data is always improving as new dev tools come into play.
