LOTRO 7 Day trial

the game isnt a free MMO, you have to buy the game to play it ... you can easily pick it up for £24 which includes a months gametime

Lotro is a great game, ive not had as much fun since SWG from an mmo although i didnt even try WoW but i didnt fancy playing in a land that looked like the teletubies

i think Lotro caters to fans of tolkien quite well and therefore a more mature user base , it might not captivate everyone but like Loki said after hundreds of hrs, its still got tons of gameplay/life in it yet

lol I know its like £10s a month I just wish I could have simply upgraded my trial subscription to a full one, however Im enjoying it so much I think im going to go out and buy it...

Very few of the MMORPG's allow you to upgrade from the trial to the full "Easily".
The main reason for this is indeed money.
What you've got to remember is that an MMORPG will have been in production for years and all during that development time the software house hasn't made a penny on the game.
It has basically been all outgoing, money to pay staff, money for servers, money for network bandwidth etc.
Once the game is released they need to make an immediate pot of cash to put towards the numerous years of development - hence the game is sold at the same price as any other game.
Your monthly fee obviously covers the ongoing cost of running the game - servers, bandwidth, staff, developers and also goes towards the old development fee's as well.

Because the market is slowly becoming saturated it's unlikely that model will change as they need that initial injection of money to get things rolling.
If however any of these software houses ever release an MMORPG as good as the old games then maybe they will release the client for free and rely on the fact the game is good enough that you will stick around for a long time and they will make their money on you that way.

I played UO for years and years, must have been 6-7.
I played most of the "modern" MMORPG's for around a year - they just do not grip you like the old ones.

for the above guys sake does anyone know if he will be able to use his character from the trial when he installs his full game?

im guessing he would log in using the details he used with the trial and still have his ingame character, saving him from having to start again.

as a side note regarding subs and ongoing costs.

they seem to be doing plenty of updates to the game (every 2 months it seems at the moment) we've already had the large evendium book 9 update and slightly smaller book 10 update.

and plans are already in place for the book 11 update which will include player / kinship housing and a possible first meeting with a balrog oooo roll on book 11!
