Sooo, I'm looking at getting a Chevy Day Van that's for sale locally. It's done mega miles 222,000 but it's had a fair amount of work done on it recently...

New Cambelt
New Alternator
Gearbox Serviced
Tyres

Anyone got any experience of these and what I should look out for when I go and see / drive it.

Guess no-one knows much about Chevy G20 day vans. How about insurance on american cars, any particular company I should look at?

Cheers

Perhaps you would do better by waiting more than four hours before throwing your toys out of the pram?

Year? Engine?

And as penski said - maybe wait rather more than 4 hours. Some of us are out working for part of the day....

***edit***

Is it actually called a "Day Van", or is it something else? Not honestly certain what this car is.

Ah, missed the G20 bit. My bad. V6 or V8? I assume V6, given that you said it had a cambelt change - all the V8s would be cam-in-block pushrod motors AFAIK.

Sorry, what? Yeah, that's exactly what I did.

I thought I would simply add an additional question to my post whilst at the same time bumping it. Jeez motor fourm is a touchy place.

The car is a 1994 Chevy G20 Day Van 4.3l V6 auto.

Right.

If the gearbox has been looked after, the mileage isn't a problem. The engine also should be no problem at that mileage if it's had a modicum of care spent on servicing it. Suspension is mostly the same as the 3/4ton and 1ton Chevy trucks - tough, but not exactly conducive to a smooth or well-handling ride. Brakes are the same as the half-ton truck - again, they work well but pedal feel is not something you will find here.

Parts are a doddle to get hold of, as a) it's a Chevy and b) nothing much changed over the course of production. For insurance - I've had my Old with Adrian Flux and then Sureterm, both have been okay but I never had to claim so YMMV.

Thanks for the info, the seller has informed me that he has recently had the gearbox serviced, new cambelt & new alternator. I've never owned an american car with a big engine, and normally wouldn't consider a car like this. However after a recent job change I now only do about 100 mile a week so figure I can justify getting something a little juicy.

The seller also said if he decided to keep it he would have got an LPG conversion done. Any idea how much it costs to get that done?

Thanks again.

Why do you want one and how much is it? :)

Just seems a little odd - if you fancy something "juicy", then why weigh it down in 2.5 tons of pedestrian day van! - Unless, of course, a van is what you are looking for then fair play! :D

Yeah I've always wanted a Chevy Van, I do a fair amount of diving and it's no fun moving all that gear around in my current car (Fiat Sceicento).

Here are a couple pics of it...

The seller just sent me a few more pics... it's got a hoover in the back door!

Also the interior is cloth unlike most vans I've seen, but I think it looks ok, possibly a little less garish

A mate has said I should check the fluid from the autobox, said it should be red and sweet smelling. I don't really know what to expect for 220,000 miles & 2k sales price.

If I try and knock him down on the price a bit, what is a good figure to go for without taking the micky?

For prices, why not take a look at the Chevy G20 section of the eBay Motors US site here, and see if they have a similar one to see what it's selling for?

Then add some for the fact that the car you're looking at is already imported and registered. I'd have said your chances of taking him a meaningful amount down from £2k are slim though.

re: auto 'box fluid - should be red, should be reasonably clean, and it shouldn't smell burnt, especially if the seller has not long had it serviced.

I own a Chevy G20 day van. You can see it here:

I want to have the wheel rims replaced but I hate all of all these modern-looking ones:

I would like them to be very simple like this one:

Would any of you guys know where I may be able to find these kind of wheel rims for a 15" wheel in the UK?
