On the Halo series page at Wikipedia, an edit originated from Sony Computer Entertainment casts aspersions on Microsoft's Halo 3. In the Halo 3 section of the Halo page, Sony added "(Halo 3) wont look any better than Halo 2." (See the first and second story images attached below.) Since then, the Halo page has been corrected and locked from further vandalism.

The WikiScanner discovery is also reported on Wired's 'Threat Level'. (See Alternative Sources.) The report and IP address have been checked by Wired senior editor Kevin Poulsen, (i.e., see the third attached image for Poulsen's comments; "Sony insults Halo 3" is the second report after the Walmart report.)

Finally, the forth and last image was taken from a 'Whois' search at the RIPE.net database for "217.18.23.2", the IP address recorded by Wikipedia as having edited the Halo page. The query shows that 217.18.23.2 is registered to SCEE (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) Liverpool Studios in Great Britain. The result also shows the studio's physical address, phone number, and email address.

Ok it's not a heinous insult but this is still pretty low and makes you wonder about other less traceable dirty campaigns going on...

And before anyone jumps down my neck I'm not saying other companies don't do it. Weren't MS and Apple caught editing each others entries earlier this month?

A lot of people alter wikis for their own ends. The CIA altered Ahmadinejad's page for example, was a petty insult as well to boot.

Doesnt that wikifinder thing trace the IP address? So I guess it must be impossible to fake an IP address then?

This stuff always happens on Wiki, thats why you can never 100% trust what's written on there only if its backed up with viable sources.

is it "sony" or simply a sony employee behind it?
Its abit harsh to blame an entire company due to one individual.
Damn Sony for not babysitting one of their thousands of employees 24/7, simple inexcusable...
Probably some employee having a giggle.

Basically this act comes under gross negligence for bringing the company into disrepute. If the person that did this was not authorised to do so. then (s)he will no doubt be show the door with a P45 and no reference.

Microsoft would be well within their rights to pursue a libel lawsuit against Sony on this matter.

It does not matter if it was an intentional or planned "attack" by Sony on Halo3 but it was performed by a Sony employee from a Sony premiss. That is the facts of the matter.

Aye if it were an employee I think its safe to say your job is bye-bye.
