I've been having some problems with my laptop recently, so want to do a fresh install. Im slightly apprehensive though, as I'm currently running Vista Home Premium, but as an upgrade from XP (upgrade disk provided by Dell).

Am I OK to do the fresh install, and still be able to activate afterwards? From a few Google's I am non the wiser.

Any help appreciated :)

You should be able to - in previous upgrade versions of Windows the installation just asked to see the original product CD, to verify you actually have it.

Hey up

Should be fine,

You will need to install the xp first, then load the vista on top. The vista upgrade will not accept the key otherwise.

Im annoyed, i have the vista home premium upgrade. lastnight i used the anytime to upgrade it to ultimate. But now when i re-install i have to install xp first, then the home premium then run the update license to unlock vista which re-installs again!! 3 installs :( oh well lol

Thanks for clearing that up. I've read somewhere that its possible to do a fresh install from the upgrade CD (using 2 installs from memory). Is that dodgy ground or can I go ahead and do that? I dont really want to have to install XP.

your not supposed to but yeah it can be done very easily.

I have done it, i know i have the legal copies of the software so to be honest its what i do :)

Thanks. I've got my XP CD that came with my latop also, I'd just rather have a totally clean install, rather than tarnish it with XP so to speak :p

I imagine microsoft wouldn't be bothered, you have the XP cd+key to cover yourself in the event of anything happening, i wouldn't worry about it and do the fresh install personally.

just wish i could find a way to do a fresh install with my legally purchased vista ultimate now :(

Installing home premium twice then running the upgrade license is a pain.
