¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've hunted everywhere, and I cannot find my passport.

Someone said I could use a picture driving licence instead, as I am not leaving the UK.

Is this true?

I very much doubt it.
As the uk didn't sign up for it. If you live in France and travel to Germany, you can use a photo id.

You don't need a passport to enter Eire, we have had an agreement with them for years. However the airline may not let you on without photo ID so check with them.

Though you needed a passport full stop now to fly anywhere. The yanks finaly have done it

In theory any govt. issue picture id will do nicely, but I go there 3 or 4 times a year and have never chanced it.
as mentioned, give 'em a bell and see how happy they'll be on both legs of the journey.

Is Ireland not one of the countries you can enter with just a driving licence or acceptable photo ID?

I forget what the legislation is called.

I doubt they'll be that bothered anyway, since you could just go to northern ireland and drive into ireland, there isn't any border authorities or anything like that.

Edit: I remember it, it's called the Schnegen agreement, but we're not signed up, however, I found this

The United Kingdom and Ireland are the only two EU members not to sign the Schengen Agreement; Ireland and the UK share a Common Travel Area with no border controls between the two. Ireland is thus unable to join the Schengen Agreement without dissolving this agreement with the UK - and therefore Northern Ireland. However the UK remains reluctant to surrender its own border controls and work permit system. Therefore United Kingdom and Ireland are signatories of the Council Decision (covering police co-operation) but not the Council Regulations (covering asylum, visas and border controls).

The issue will be if you will be allowed to fly without a passport, if not you'll have to get the ferry.

my mate went, he needed his passport.

Surely you're entering another country, so thus you'll need your passport.

My Girlfriend lives in Dublin - you can travel on any photo ID with Ryanair. Can't say i've ever done it though. I have a passport so might as well use it for something :)

Have we not signed the Schengen Agreement because our country is the prefered place to live in the EU coz of the benefits? these illegal immigrants loads of borders to get to the tunnel

You don't need a passport to enter Ireland on a ferry from GB so I'd assume the same for flights. I have flown into Dublin quite a few times but I've always had my passport so I'm not 100% sure what the rules are.

If you're really worried, fly into Belfast and get the train down.

I'll give it a go... I've looked on the website:

http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/faqs.php?sect=pid&quest=photoid

"A valid driving licence with photo is ONLY acceptable photo ID for travel on domestic flights within the UK and domestic flights within the Republic of Ireland."

Looks like I should be able to do it. :)

Not the same specifics, but on a stag do to Scotland from England, there was a minor problem at both ends with one guy who managed to get let through using a student canteen card (photo) that had been expired for eight years.

Hmmm, I've been to the UK with an ID card, and it was fine through all the checks at the airports, going to Poland on that card is also ok, on the card it says you can travel with it to : Any EU country, turkey, andorra, iceland, lichtenstein, monaco, norway, switserland and san marino.

Never had a passport of my own.

I flew from exeter to dublin several times and only had my provisional photo license as ID.

If you catch the ferry, you don't need any ID at all.
