£600...plus whatever i decide to pay on top.

I would like...

C2D
1Gb RAM +
80Gb HDD +
The "best" GFX on the market at the moment. :o

I've been looking at the Dell Vostro 1500 Intel Core 2 Duo T7300...can i get anything else? Aiming to keep under £1000 i think.

How long can you wait? It's a good machine, bit of weight in it but thats expected, definatly viable at its price.

I had both a laptop and a desktop while at uni. Hardly ever used the laptop compared with the desktop every day.

I think I used the laptop for a total of about 100 hours versus over 6000 on the desktop - and no not just games!

You could use the Vostro as a desktop anyway so you may as well get that. Laptops aren't needed at Uni because there are usually plenty of PC's to use, and if you intend to use it in lectures then be prepared to be known as "laptop kid" by others. Nobody uses laptops in lectures unless they want to draw attention to themselves. If you're one of these people, I don't want to post in this thread anymore :p

Harsh, but true.

They tend to be heavy when combined with a load of text books etc, so a lot of people end up leaving them behind, im just going from opinions ive heard from friends. I suppose it depends on how many computers your uni has though, and how capable they are.

I know i for one regret getting my laptop massively, it was too awkward/heavy to ever be used as anything more than a desktop, and ofcourse not upgradeable in any way.
Suppose this has led to a lot of bias , but the 5 laptops weve had always seemed terrible investments.

Err...and apparantly people agree :D

I doubt i'd take it in to lectures...

Surely it's more socialable to take your laptop somewhere else besides your room? Group study sessions! (Sarcasm/joke btw)

I want to invest in a cheap C2D Shuttle later on but "later on" = months away.

Edit: Interesting reading the above comments..almost contradicting everything i once thought. :o

I'll stop it now.

Don't see the problem with laptops at uni, I use mine a lot.

Means I don't have to transfer work around when working in room or at uni, carry laptop everywhere and you always have software you need and your work.

For £1000 you'd buy a £1200 laptop?

Good luck ;)

lol.

Id say a laptop is a bad idea unless you need to carry it around with you. If you will only be using it in your room get a desktop, tft and a external hard drive. Laptops always seem like a good idea at the time but the novelty soon wears off imo
