do 8800s score lower than 2900XTs in 3dmark?

My 2900xt before it broke got 10500 3dmarks, whereas my 8800GTS 640 only manages 8500. All settings are off etc it just seems a disappointingly low score

I think the 2900s do get good 3DM scores, however you're not going to get a 20% boost over a GTS in real world usage, it's a lot closer between the two cards.

I get 8600 with mine as well at stock settings, overclock a little and it will easily break 10,000 3DMark points, mines at 650/2000, can go further but no need, i would think something like 600/1800 will do it comfortably, 8800 GTS's benefits a lot more from overclocking than a 2900xt in 3DMark06 it seems.

Your both to low, i get over 9100 all stock.

make sure you got AA/AF off, everything set to performance in Nv CP, but they do score lower than 2900's.

Hmm, not really, thats cheating lol.

Leave Nvidia driver settings at defaults for 3DMark and dont mess with 3DMarks settings.

By default Nvidia will be set to Quality (not High Quality) and No SuperAA, I change these both for games.

1st I have heard of, you leave drivers way they are installed and thats Quality, If I slid the slider to the far left what do you think my 14,500 would become ?.

No it isn't, thats how you benchmark.

No, that's how you try and get an extra few mm on your e-peen :)

Personally I think it is stupid people benchmarking modern cards with all fastest performance settings etc - it's not like you are actually gonna use them for gaming. The most annoying thing is that it makes comparisons between systems to see if you are scoring about right much more difficult, because some people are running with max tweaks (suicide overclocks, all sliders on min, all services disabled, changing priority of 3dmark etc etc).

You then always get someone barging into a thread saying "your score is no good, I get XXXX on mine" but of course it isn't really an apples-to-apples comparison.

I use to think that, but I've had my whole system replaced with the same components and still the same, i do get about 9000 in xp, but i get 8660'ish almost every time on Vista, as soon as i overclock a little it shoots up.

I now get just above 11,000 from OC'ing CPU/GFX.
