Xubuntu for SMP folding?

Hi,

Currently I'm using Ubuntu on VMWare to get some SMP points.

Xubuntu is supposed to be lighter on the system, so would I be better off running Xubuntu to fold? That way it'd put less 'stress' on my PC & should run faster within VMWare?

Thanks,
Craig.

I've thought about it too. Not so much in terms of CPU load, but rather that a simpler distro would need less RAM allocated to the VM.

Yeah, that's what I'm looking for, mainly just less RAM usage. I'm not really looking for faster Folding as I know that won't differ much between each distro... ideally some sort of command line distro with internet access ;)

I might see how I do with stripping down Ubuntu.

I think Ubuntu Alternative is entirely command line. I may be looking into using this myself once I have my server built.

Bezerker is the one to see about such matters as I do believe he eschews the use of a GUI for his foldy rigs.

Ubuntu Alternative is server edition. Gives you just a command line, and a very minimal install. Works great inside a VMWare session. From what I can see Billy's instructions will work fine on it too.

the server ubuntu works fine - ran it myself untill FF came out.
uses about 100-150mb less ram, and worked with everything this fine batch of people wrote/linked to it

And unlike the desktop version it worked first time too - then I got greedy and wanted Fahmon and stuff and it all got complex :(

- come to think of it I'm only using the desktop version of Ubuntu because i like the startup screen more ;) :D

I'm currently using Ubuntu Server as a VM just to fold. As shadowscotland said it uses less ram than the desktop version but crunching wise I've not noticed any difference in performance.
