World Cup Refs Were Told To Target Crouch

It's shocking that ref's would target one player like that.

I can totally understand them having videos of certain players and saying:

"You see what he did there, that's a foul and we need to watch out for anyone doing that"

But this sounds more like:

"You see that fellow Crouch - keep a close eye on him"

Although I have thought for a long time that Crouch does give away a lot of needless fouls. He's definately not a dirty player, but he does tend to get his arms all over players when he shouldn't really need to.

He shouldn't be targeted, but he does use his elbows quite a bit from the matches I seen him play in... hopefully he get dropped from the England team as I really do not rate him as a player even with his goal/match ratio is impressive, the way the team plays with him on the pitch is not the best way IMHO for england to play.

Disgraceful, but we've always known referee's are as thick as thieves. We knew this at the World Cup though when some players would get away with murder and others got booked for nothing.

I have a 6'7 friend that I play football with, and I think the reason he fouls a lot is because of his height... he can't come in low on slide tackles (closer to knee height, sometimes more), and his arms are everywhere as they're so long...

The referees are a disgrace though.

I think thats as much to do with his gangly height then anything else, and the fact that when he's fighting for a ball the person he's against is usually around his waist!

To be fair I did actually notice Crouch conceeding a HELLUVA lot of freekicks for England last year... many of them for really innocuous challenges, just going for the ball. I mean even if he just jumps up behind a defender and happens to brush their back, refs were blowing up.

Graham Poll's comments told us nothing we didn't know, Crouch is targetted by referees because of his height and they will give a free kick against him for any physical contact he makes. It's disgraceful really when most of the time it's actually the defender fouling him, pulling him or tugging his shirt or whatever because they can't get near him in the air.
