hydraulic clutch

whats the difference between a hydraulic clutch and a "normal" wet/dry one?

A hydraulic clutch uses...you guessed it, a hydraulic system (fluid) to operate the clutch. An 'ordinary' clutch uses a cable directly attached to the pedal/gearbox.

AFAIK most newer cars nowadays use hydraulic clutches.

And hydralic ones are horrid to do when the slave cylinder is in a horrid position so you end up getting clutch fluid in your eye and mouth. Not nice.

I think you may be confusing two subjects into one there.

The clutch will be actuated either by a normal cable with just the power of your foot, or with a hydraulic system to help you operate it.

Wet clutches is when the clutch is bathed in a cooling fluid, so constantly wet, and dry is when there's no fluids in there.

but performance/operation is no different? just the feel?
Just 2 ways of skinning a cat.

Hydraulic clutch = you press the pedal, hydraulics move the clutch arm on the gearbox

Manual clutch = you press the pedal, a cable moves the clutch arm on the gearbox

That's it.

supposedly hydraulic should give a more consistent feel over the life of the clutch without adjustments being needed but when it goes wrong... ££££££

But you never get used to the smell of gear oil :(
Yuck, you're right there

arent cable clutch pedals auto adjusting?

or is that only some?
They are, it's on a ratchet on the pedal normally.

The bonus of a hudraulic clutch is there's no cable to stretch or snap and failure of the hydraulic system happens over a period of time so you get a bit more warning. Funny how they have made a comeback, cars went for cables over hydraulics for years :D

Hydraulic pushes oil which pushes the cluch plates apart.

Normal ones wither directly push the clutch plates apart, or pull a cable which does so.

At the end of that day I still had the taste of brake fluid and a stinging eye. Even though I instantly drank a litre of tango orange and rinsed my eye out.

I'm hoping you used water for your eye...?

Overall hydraulic is the 'better' system as you don't get cable stretch/snap. Cable tends to dominate as it's much cheaper and the dealer can screw you for more cash to change it.

Oh, and you DO get used to the smell of gear oil - your gearbox obviously doesn't leak fast enough. Ummm, EP90.
