New Opera Alpha Out!

Im a long time user of Opera as well.
To me, its just plane better.
The customisation for the GUI wins it for me. FF you can customise the GUI a lot, but Opera, you can have any part of its UI anywhere on the screen. Amazing.

Aye its pretty darned good! Just goes to show that the highest profile offerings aren't always the best.

Did anyone ever experience Opera 9.23 or earlier crashing on them? I had it happen to me quite often. Normally happened when I had a few tabs open and was trying to switch between them. I just got a Visual Studio crash window. Sometimes when I restarted Opera and restored the tabs the same thing happened instantly! Can't say I've experienced this with 9.50, touch wood. ;)

Sorry i actually meant Ctrl + f, for inline find (when enabled otherwise you get the regular box). I'm on Vista so that's probably gonna make some sort of difference too.

"." searches everything textual
"," searches only text links on the page

It's good but i want my old inline search back it worked slightly different...

Never experience any crashes like that Marc, although it did crash very sporadically, but it had been open for days and in and out of sleep/hibernate etc... i suppose i expected it, couldnt be reproduced though. So far i haven't closed 9.5a down yet, its not slowing down but does seem to be eating memory (currently sat at 300mb!). But i can live with that as long as its lightening fast, i do have two windows (love being able to open trashed windows - i've wanted this for so long!) each with about 15 tabs open with all sorts of content including a pre loaded 200mb+ RealMedia movie of the iPod Touch on the apple site. So it's not doing bad.

In fact i'd go as far to say so far this is a VERY good alpha!

Ah right. Now THAT is funky cool. I'm sure if I remember them, they'll come in handy sometime. Daaamn! Opera just gets better and better.

CTRL + F works fine for me. I get a little window pop up? That meant to happen?

Hmm perhaps its Visual Studio causing me problems. Its stopping iTunes from running. The flaming installer fails so I need to find a way to purge my PC of Visual Studio, preferably without formatting.

Yeah there is a LOT to Opera its probably taken me years to find and then actually remember all this stuff! Worrying really...

If you still have both Opera's installed open 9.23 (Because i know this works) and type this in the url bar opera:config these are all the detailed preferences you can't normally change as well as the ones you normally can but in a difficult to use interface :p quick search inline and turn on inline find, resart opera and then try ctrl + f it's a much better way of searching, like "." and "," but its what i'm used to!

Also if you want to read some stuff about the new Opera, this guy's Blog isn't bad either...

//Edit: I'm a fool just checked it on my Old 9.23 install its "use integrated search" opera:config#Use Integrated Search copy that in enable it then restart, then try ctrl + f. Its not actually inline find thats "." and "," this is opera integrated search varies slightly..

//Edit2: OK so integrated search works (without resart woo!) on kestrel, but the Wand problem is a known bug it seems, well at least other people are also experiencing it on other platforms too.

Right I did that in Opera 9.23 and nothing changed! Ctrl + f doesn't look any different.

That blogger work for Opera then? :p Haven't noticed any problems with the wand in Kestrel/9.5.

Does ctrl f still bring a box up? If you've ticked use integrated search and restarted opera when you press ctrl the cursor should now jump to top right where the find in page search box is you just start typing and it finds/highlights as you type...

Goto preferences and check in the search tab "find in page" with a shortcut f should still be there if not you've buggered yourself and i've got to tell you how to edit an ini file... (I've done this before too :D)

:D hahaha

Right you have to add something special which i can't see or remember into the searches.ini file in %appdata% now i can't see which search you need to add because its not that user friendly if i'm honest. Personally i'd bite the bullet lose your customised searched and replace them with mine for the time being then recustomise... It's a bit round about but looking at my searches.ini i can'y see what the hell you actually need to type (this is the only way you can re-add it).

Thanks for the link. I'll give it a go. Er can't see anything there that looks like the find in current page thing.

Sorry i'm on something obviously i can't type :)
Hehe. No probs. You've been amazingly helpful. I think I will just make a new profile in 9.23 or reinstall it and er keep that find in current page search. I'll see if I can copy the settings over to 9.5 now I've made that my default browser.

Replace your urlfilter.ini with the latest one too.
:eek: Just what I've needed! I've been manually blocking stuff or compiling css rules for Opera to hide crap. That list could totally clean up the websites I use. THANKS! :D

Haha, i can't believe you've been without that, i think, i think entry 12 maybe the one in the search.ini but mine says its deleted and it isn't so who am i to guess, you can just keep on guessing and changing deleted to 0. Actually in fact do that to all of them and i'll appear again you'll just have to delete the searches you don't like. Why didn't i think of that before...?

No problem anyway i need to pass this on to someone else, Opera is great its just fiddly at times, but once your profile is set up everytime you upgrade (apart from alpha/betas) your profile remains the same...

I've never looked into this (something i'll do now) but with a bit of Opera confiuring it's probably possible to dynamically link it to a urlfilter.ini thats stored on a webserver so it keeps itself upto date.

One more thing you'll want to know is the bigger urlfilter.ini is the slower it takes opera to start (and maybe shutdown im not sure). So you can use a barebones micro list that blocks only a few thousand (:p) instead for a speedier startup. it just depends how often you open and close opera...

Entry 12 looks like a support base when I try the url. Think I will just do a new install of 9.23 later on this morning and get the search info then. I'll paste the info for the find in current page if you want.

As for the urlfilter.ini, can you suggest any sites that I can look at to check its working?

Probably not without breaking the forum rules unfortunately :p Honestly can't remember which ones have them anymore apart from one which is dubious. Trust me it works though, because when installed Kestrel for the first time fresh i wondered why websites looked so clutered, then realised i was missing urlfilter.

You know what i'm thinking i might as well condense all this info into a little Opera Sticky/How-to. I'll set it out nice if i get it stickied cba otherwise. Might do this tomorrow if i get the time. Add me to msn too i'll link you...

//Edit: I dont have msn lying round here its my name Alex Dodd no spaces and i use gmail :)
