In my own little world
i sent off my driving license to update the address however i put the wrong address on it, i put the address of the flat below. what i was planning on doing was collecting it from the flat below and sending it back to change the address as its free to do. however it never turned up there and the DVLA wont send me a new one because i don't have the one they sent and they wont send another due to it not being my address and i'm not paying £22 for another on. what do i do ? do i have to have a license ?

Yes you do have to have a license.
Although you will be logged in the main DVLA database as holding one - the fact it's registered to the wrong address is an offence in itself.
Police can ask to see your license if you are ever stopped - in theoryh it is an offence not to be able to produce it on demand on the roadside, however there are other laws in place that contradict this.
However if stopped at the roadside and you do fail to show your driving license you can be given a "producer" which will require you to show your license (both photocard and paper part) at a police station within 7 days.

You're call but the fact it's registered to the wrong address and you would be unable to produce it on demand leaves you open to fines that could run into hundreds if not more.

well that aint gonna happen it takes 2-3 weeks to get the license back.

i think i'm gonna phone them back later and hope to speak to someone else and say just send another one out as i didn't receive it and not mention i don't live there. i can then collect the new one and update the address for free. just hope they don't log the calls.

seems like it did turn up after all, the neighbour put it through my letter box yesterday. all i need to do is send it back for an address change. how many address changes can i do for free ?

I was watching road wars (or something similar recently) and apparently most coppers won't bother with producers now, at least not for people who actually hold a valid license, it's a waste of everyone's time and effort.

Never saw a limit on the documentation myself.
 
If you havent already got the photo card driving licence then this is an ideal time to get one, with the change of addresss your planning you get one for free. You might not even have to pay for a photograph as they can use the one on your passport (if you have one and its a recent picture). As already mentioned all this can be done online too
 
My dad paid for a new one, he had a conviction expire and didn't want it on the back of the card in case he has to show it to a policeman officer.
 
When I moved my driving license made it to the DVLA but the V5 did not. After a few emails I managed to get them to send me a form for a replacement V5 (to the old address which I could still get mail from) with a stamp on it showing I didnt have to pay the replacement fee. I think I got this because my driving license made it as did my gf's license and V5
