Hey guys,
Been wondering this lately, are you allowed to park on your driveway if you don't have a dropped curb?I remember my mum saying we are not allowed to do this because it damages the pavement but recently when I spoke to my friends about this they all said its fine so I'm kinda unsure.

Hope you guys can answer my question.

Thanks.

You can but someone will probably block you in.

Dunno what your mums is talking about though...

You can also pay to have a dropped curb put in by the counsel though it;s pretty expensive iirc.

Just spoken to my mum about it,this was about 7 years ago,she said that the council sent a letter to us telling us we can't park on the driveway cos we are driving over the pavement and this may cause damage to the piped underneath the pavement?

Sounds like a load of carp to me?

You can park there but you have no right of entry, and people are entitled to park across your driveway.

Unless you've already parked on your driveway then they have no right to block you in

So basically I am allowed to park in my front garden but people can park infront of my driveway and I can't complain about that?

The council don't care about me parking in my front garden without dropped curb?Don't wanna get in trouble with the council, can't be bothered with the hassle.

I'm pretty sure you will have issues from the council if you do.

I know you can get your curb lowered (you may need planning permission) and it costs around £300. Useful if you have people walking past damaging your car i guess.

It is illegal to go on without a drop kerb, our next door neighbour had the same issue. He was warned to get it sorted but wasn't bothered, that was until the gentleman from the council came and tld him it was illegal. Has to be done I'm aftraid.

But there is no drop curb, therefore, no access rights implied.

I am probably wrong and i cant find it now (Google doesnt like me!) but i thought there was a rule along the lines of you not allowed to block access to car from getting onto the highway

Right so you're telling me that the space I park on, on my drive, which doesn't have a dropped kerb behind it (it does on the other side though) is illegal to park on ? haha what a load of rubbish, this can't be serious?

Maybe I should be slightly more concise for those who can't grasp this.

Parking on your drive is fine, crossing the pavement without a drop-kerb is not. SO, whilst you may hire a large vehicle to pick your car up and move it over nice and legally, drive over the pavement without a dedicated drop-kerb is fundamentally illegal.

parking on your drive is fine the ilegal part come when you mount the pavement (driving on the pavent not being legal) which is why you need the droped kerb and yes there nothing to stop any one blocking you in on the drive if u dont have a drop kerb.
also the police are only going to care if some one blocks you, from getting out of the driveway, stoping you getting into your driveway even with a dropped kurb is much less likely to be followed up.

Unless you have access to it without going "up" a curb (which can and does wear the curbstones and damage them/their seating*), you cannot park on it (as it involved going over the pavement/causing damage to council property).

The reason for the dropped curb is two fold.
1: To allow easier access and show that access is required.
2: To protect the pavement.

*They aren't intended to have a car pulling over them on a regular basis (and may topple).

house across the way from me has only got their curb dropped on one bit but their driveway is 3x the dropped bit. we're making our driveway bigger and to be honest have no intentions of having the rest of the curb dropped

Part of the paper work involved in obtaining a lowered curb stone is the permission to allow you to drive aross the pavement to enter the driveway/parking space.

Also, even with a lowered curb there is not right of access, so some one can prevent you from entering your drive by parking across it, but you cannot be parked in if already on the drive.

By the sounds of it I can't park on the driveway then as I need to drive over the curb.:(
Thanks for the help guys.
