Just had a Virgin media engineer to my house

Its a joke completely. Best thing was is that the woman on the phone when i was ordering it was adamant that 20mb isnt capped and she lied blatantly to me, even after reading it off the site.

Oh that reminds me... Virgin Media van drivers drive like LUNATICS... almost got run over on more than one occasion :p

It's 3gig starting after 4pm, if you hit it you get slowed down for 4 hours, then the counter resets.
Theoretically you could max out the connection between 00:01am and 15:59 and not get touched.

Thats better than i thought, which is good.

Does anyone know what are virgin like about downlding torrents as thats where i get most of my bigger game demos from.

they dont throttle torrents if thats what your asking

they just restrict how much you download via the above throttling to all traffic procedure (ie go over your limit in the specified time and we knock your whole connection back to the stone age)

thats 3 gig a day

after you've had you're 3 gig peak time. they throttle your connection back to the stone age. not as much of a problem on the 20mb package. but considering some of the battlefield 2 patches got to 150mb, i can see plenty of innocent people being "throttled" on the lower packages.

The latest one is 540Mb . . .

Ive just downloaded that and a couple of 100mb files and i have no problems. Unless you are ripping off software/music/movies, its nothing to really worry about . . .

Though i do agree that it is wrong to do that and call it an unlimited connection . . because it isnt . . .

Depends how you want to define unlimited. Even though I get restricted to 5mbit speeds after downloading 3GB, I can still download 2GB per hour if I want to. That means that even between the 8 hour period of 4pm till midnight I can do 16GB if I really wanted to. Ok, so it's not as good as the 64GB I'd be able to do unrestricted but it's still quite sufficient.

You can still download as much as you like, your speeds just get shafted. It's really not that big a deal for 20mbit users but I think the limits are set too low for 2mbit and 4mbit users.

I think its rediculas to only get 1/4 of what you pay for for 20mb. I am going to be getting 4mb because at lesat i only loss half. 20mb should be capped at 10mb if not 15mb. 2mb should be 1.5mb and 4mb should be 3mb.

Infact... how about they achualy spend neough money to be able to cope with what people are paying for!!

I hardly call 5meg stone age for 4 hours, hell thats better than most ADSL user's who average 2 meg if your lucky unless you living on top of a BT exchange and have a great ADSL ISP that doesnt restrict you in the slightest. Yes I know there will be a few here, but they are well in the minority. I just dont understand the gripe with the throttling, it help's keep the network stable and fair for all during peak times.

Do what I do, after midnight thrash it like hell for downloading, during peak use as normal, no probs.

I think us ex TW Cable 10 meg liners got a hell of a good deal for a while there, and to an extent we still do onthe 20 meg line, just manage your time with it better.

So today I had a Virgin media engineer out to my house today to try and sort out the countless problems with my broadband. So he came and tested the speed and then said he would change the modem from a SB5100 installed a few months ago.

Then he had to ring up Virgin three times to try and get the modem activated. The speeds increased by 200Kbs and that was about it. He did not seemed clued up about the broadband most likely as virgin don't train engineers. He did not know about the speeds caps during peak time. He also agreed virgin were pretty crap and that they got rid of half their staff including engineers to save more money.

The guy was a nice guy and not his fault virgin don't train the engineers to a good standard but all I have to say is I am shocked about how bad virgin are. They turned a good telewest a very good company into such a bad one. I guess the tech guy only stays with virgin as he gets it with out tax.

You think thats bad!, the one that came round my house tried to seduce me! (seriously not a joke)

Are you sure he wasnt phoning chat lines and getting horny at your expense while pretending to activate your line, hence the seduction? :D j/k make a complaint to Virgin, and say he isnt one.

he started asking me questions about my broadband, then he started going off topic, and asking more and more personal type question, then he started getting closer to me before putting his hand on my leg and arm round my shoulder (he was in his late 40's aswell), as soon as he did that i got up and told him to **** off, he went off in his van and i was in shock.

Should i call VM?

I dont know if your M or F, assuming your Male, but if you dont report it, the guy could do it again, with a worse story.
