If you are using public transport, or another means of transport that may render you immobile with no other means of communicating your current status to an interested third-party, yes.

Similarly in a car, you cannot guarantee your car won't break down - and if you are travelling on motorways or on pretty remote tracks, I'd prefer to have a phone with me than walk 50 miles to the nearest public one.

Also I have one as part of my job. My teams includes the support team which provides cover to the business from 7am until 7pm. I sometimes need to be contacted with problems. I get the phone and get paid overtime for extra hours whether I'm contacted or not.

Reasonable enough scenarios?

Yes. I did not contest the issue of whether you needed one or not. I merely commented that in my opinion many people have mobile phones (I can use this version of the phrase) and this could show that people like to communicate.

I agree that some people seem to need a mobile phone more than Oxygen - but that's not true for everyone.

You asked a question, I answered. I wasn't contesting your statement, just giving MY reasons why the suggestion you put forward is not true for everyone.

People need to communicate.
Without communication, you wouldn't exist.

I use a phone to find people, most of the conversations go like this:
"Where are you"
"The Big Square"
"kthxbi"
