Car Exchange and Money Back?

I just wondered if anything like the topic existed?

Basically I want to get a smaller car. However the car I'm after will be a few grand cheaper than what I am asking for the car.

I wondered if any garage would take my car and give me cash as well as a part-x.

Cheers,

M.

As above, some garages will but they won't give you a good price at all.

You best bet is either to sell it and then buy, or sell it asking for PX + cash.

Keep it. It's better than anything else for that sort of money or less. Do you really want to drive around in a rattly 206 or something worth £4k after you've had that?

Not really - however the other way of looking at it is that it is a massive part of a deposit on a new property.

Basically the entire reason is that, currently and for the next two weeks, I am a field-IT engineer - soon I start a new job which is static and I'm living very close. I really don't need a car, however to visit the folks having a small run around would be good. I've drove quite a few cars in the past few years and I agree I would prefer to keep it, especially for long journeys! For what I'm going to be using it for (Maximum of 2 hours per week if that) I don't really mind what I'm driving. At the moment it's just depriciating at the moment with me not using it.

True, but it's dead cash sitting there in a depreciating asset. As he's said, if he downgrades it frees up some of this for a deposit.

If I were in that situation I'd be selling it privately and buying something dirt cheap for the one trip a week :)

Need to get a parkers to get the value right - I've just put it down at a price I feel is right.

As said I'd love to keep it - I've never really had a problem with it at all but my situation warrants it I'm afraid!

Running costs aren't the problem the depreciation is!

If you only need a car for a couple of hours a week, I'd get rid of a car altogether and just use Taxis.

Otherwise, I'd go for ultra budget motoring with an old Mondeo or Xantia, I wouldn't ditch your car for something that was just worth a couple of thousand less, it's rather pointless.

The trouble is you'll lose out twice because you'll pay top dollar at the dealer but he'll give you bottom dollar for your car. I know you're worried about depreciation, but whatever new car you buy will be worth less then what you pay for it.

What you're surgesting is only a sensible plan if you buy and sell privately.

Out of interest what do you drive now and what are you looking at buying?

What I drive now is in my sig.

What I'm thinking of buying is a cheap Golf / Polo / etc. preferably something German.

A good buy would be a £100 old "breadvan" style polo. I know a guy who got one for £60, used it for a year with no bother (did 30000 miles or something) and only did the basic servicing.

Basically do the money saving thing properly, or dont bother at all ;)

Cheap / Reliable / Easy to maintain! Not really bothered if I saw say a Fiesta and a Golf together for the same price same specs then I'd go for the Golf as I have had them before and never had a problem (including a 1994 1.4 Golf) it's just personal preference.

Yes I would buy a car for £500 if I could find something okay! I would also have an Escort or Mondeo again something cheap.

Does anyone have a parkers to hand - my cars in my sig just want to know if I'm in the right ball-park price wise!

Cheers,

Parkers are online, the price guide for a 50k miles car are as follows.

Original Price £24,880
Franchised Dealer £7,340
Independent Dealer £6,700
Private Good £6,525
Private Poor £5,415
Part Exchange £5,885

Bearing in mind your car has covered double the mileage, it will be worth somewhat less. That said, the prices in Parkers are a rough guide. Depending on your location and the actual spec of the car it could be worth more or less than the figures in the guides. It's often worth looking through Autotrader to see what simmilar cars in your area have been priced at.

Yeah I have had a look at Autotrader and it does seem very close to others with similar spec cars.

Thanks for the info!
