Received a fine today from the London Borough of Barnet for apparently driving in a bus lane in the evening on the 25th of August 2007. Fatal flaw there being the fact that I was actually in Germany!

So, I assume some ****** has cloned my numberplates (probably seeing my car on autotrader) and is now driving around a stolen car doing all sorts with it with my numberplates on!

Anyway... just wondered what the best way of reporting it to the police is - I can hardly call 999, can I? :p

Report it to your local police station. Dispute the fine. Contact the DVLA and get your car reregistered with a new number plate.

Thats what happened to my brother scooter, Some guy in a white saxo used his number plates and got £200+ fines ?????

Scooter number plates on a saxo

People aint got brains

I've spoken to the Police and they said to contest the fine I've got initially, and if I get any more they can take action. I need to inform the DVLA too.

At least I've got a flawless alibi for this one, the car physically wasn't in the country, otherwise it could have been tricky to prove if it was another silver BMW 5 series :(

Oh how everyone laughed at me for telling people Not to post pics of there cars showing there number plates.
Sorry to hear that dude but it should be fairly easy to prove it wasn't you.

Yep, cos it was probably Fox, logged onto OcUK, thought 'awesome another silver 5 series, CLONE TIME! Then went blasting round the country down bus lanes.

LOL I doubt that very much. Doubt the car is even a 5 series.

Might be worth making a note where you are each day to jog your memory if it happens again?

It was probably someone that thought "I want to clone a silver 5 series, where would be the best place to look for a plate on the internet - ahhhh Autotrader".

Sorry to hear about this Olly, I left the plate on our silver 3 series when I put the pics on Autotrader a couple of weeks ago, didn't even think about it! But it really does make sense that anyone dodgy would look on autotrader first as it's so easy to search,

Do you cover your numberplate with tippex everytime you park up ?

hehehehe :D :p

Can imagine that being quite funny as it goes.

"we are here"

"wooo, party time"

"you guys go ahead, just gotta sort my plates"

"eh?"

the number plate is written on the tax disc too. theyll still clone you everytime you take your car out :( get a mountain bike (no more clon0rz)

Sorry to hear it.

Appeal against the fine. Contact the DVLA and explain whats happened.

Have they got video evidence of the offense?

Maybe I'll go buy a green 106 (1.1), slap on some plates saying M311 TRB, and go rob a bank.

That OK with you? If you're so concerned about other people's cars being cloned, you've obviously taken EVERY precaution to make sure it can't happen to you.

Ah you're lucky, ours was cloned and used in various robberies, my wife was getting pulled over almost every night, took a few attempts to get the police to differentiate between our car and the stolen one but they seem to have got the message finally.

Let me know if you're coming to rob my branch - I'll give you a 30 second head start - you'll need it in a 1.1 106:p I'll also have a word with the cashiers to tell 'em you're serious incase they laugh too hard at the uber-speed of your chosen get-away vehicle.
