Nine hundred top fan, turn it upside down?

Just had a thought while overclocking my Q6600.

The layout of the case and mobo mean that the fans on the front of the hard drive bays are blowing air in, but under my 8800GTS. This surely means that the air flow isn't great to the CPU as it's above the GFX card.

Anyone ever thought about turning the top fan upside down so it's blowing air down onto the CPU and HSF to help cool it?

The rear exhaust and honeycomb on the side will surely deal with extracting the extra air.

Well since heat rises i dont think it will help much. Its better to exhaust the air out the top instead of blowing air in and keeping the hot air in the case.

to be fair that isnt a smart idea and if i remember correctly the fan only has holes on one side would only fit on one way. havent taken mine apart in ages so cant remember

You could just use long M3 bolts, still don't think it would help.

nope i tried this and it made all of 0oc difference. if Antec didnt think the case was optimised for the best cooling then they wouldnt have made it how it is.

lol yeah very true.

Has anyone tried putting one of the HDD bays at the top of the case to maximise airflow to thew CPU then?

Does anyone agree that the GFX card restricts airflow to the CPU?

well even with both 120mm fans at the bottom most positions, there is still a large amount of air blowing towards the back of the case and with the 2 fans at the top and back it cause the air to almost be sucked upwards towards the card and CPU. i have a X1900XT which i consider to be fairly long and i've never thought of this being a problem to cpu cooling.

edit: if you're that worried about it just do this to your case

edit: i under stand that you mobo layout will be different to mine but this is how mine was back when i was using it.

now as you can see the gfx card sat nicely between both cages. but i would have said there was less airflow getting to my gfx card considering i had both my harddrives in the bottom cage meaning there was a very small stream of air getting through and yet that was still more then enough. i did however add an additional 80mm fan between the top age and cd drive, only just noticeable in the picture but to be honest i didnt see that it made much difference

yeah, I have Gigabyte DS4 and the GFX card is about an inch down from the rear exhaust fan meaning about the top third of the top front fan is above the card.

Bummer :(

well heres an idea, put one cage at the top, leave a gap of 2, have another cage and put cd/dvd drive at the bottom then both the GFX and CPU have dedicated fans

Hmm, sounds like a plan,

Will see if the SATA cables and power cables reach.

Currently @ 3.6 and temps are 45 idle 75 load, seems to be running ok in STALKER and C&C3. Not prime stable though :(

the gfx card may act to block some of the airflow, but dont forget, the air that the top case fan blows out has to come from somewhere, so that suction it creates inside the case will pull air from where its avilable, like the hot air from around the cpu. So as long as its blow out hot air, its working as intended, and as long as your cpu isnt overheating, theres no need to change it.

hmm i would work on getting it prime stable though i have recently had a very bad incident due to my overclock not being prime stable. i say prime stable but what i mean is stable enough to cope with everything, doesnt have to be that stable to cope with games
