To get a digi cam with a good macro would I have to spend a lot?

At the moment I have an old pentax optio 450 which seems to struggle close up, my dad has a kodak, not sure how that does close up.

I would like to take some good detailed pic's of my pet Tarantula's.

What would you recommend thats fairly cheap.

Thanks

Nick

you wanna put a rough figure on "fairly cheap" ?

Fuji s6500fd has a 1cm Super Macro range, it's fab and can be picked up for about £150 in the right places.

Thanks, thats about my price range.

It looks good.

Would there be any advantage stretching to a second hand D-SLR? such as a Canon 350d or by time I bought a lens too will I be way over the cost of the Fuji?

Are any compact camera's good at close up shots? Would be handy so I could take in holiday too next month.

Thanks so far

Nick

Not really unless your willing to spend a lot of money, a good macro lens on it's own is going to cost between £300-£400.

Ah, thats a bit more than I would like to spend, unless I can find a second hand one with the lens already, although I wouldnt know a good macro lens if it jumped up and punched me in the eye, lol.

Another vote for the S6500fd here.

Some Olympus compacts used to have a super macro mode. Not sure if they still do? Might also be worth checking out the Fuji F31 to see if that has a super macro mode. Fuji's site is playing up at the moment so I can't check myself.

I just went to a local camera shop to have a look at some, they didnt have the 6500 in stock but they did have the 5700 which he said was pretty much the same but a little smaller.

He also shown me the Canon Powershot A720, he said the lens was better than the 5700 and its a lot smaller too although it is a little bit more expensive but its macro mode is down to 1cm the same as the Fuji.

Any opinions on this?

Thanks

Nick

edit - the Fuji F31 says 5cm macro.

edit 2 - NorthstaNder -just looked at your Flickr page, the 6500 can take some amazing pics, well done, your convincing me towards it lol.

not necessarily (sp)

i have a 35-80mm lens for my canon, stick it on reversed and it is as good as any other macro lens imo), cost £30ish + £5 for a mount.

Reading more specs it seems that the Fuji 6500 can only focus at 10cm.

The 5700 is lighter, cheaper and has 7.1MP.

Can anyone confirm how close the 6500 can focus?

Short list

Fuji FinePix S6500fd
Fuji FinePix S5700
Canon PowerShot A720 IS

OK I have ordered the S6500, went it to Jessops again today and had a play with it.

Now I need a memory card, it takes XD right? How many pics will fit on 1Gb and 2Gb?

Thanks

Nick

I know you've already ordered it but don't worry, the macro is 1cm confirmed ... very, very close.

I have one and it's the business :)

Thanks, NorthstaNder already confirmed on msn :)

Cant wait til it arrives so I can start taking pics.

I doubt I'll use all the features and i'll probably still suck at picture taking but nvm, let the fun begin. :D

Camera arrived today, sadly it beat the memory card here, oh well.

I suck at taking pictures, im going to read the manual, just been through the stickys and a photography tutorial is next.

So far I have snapped my gf and a few random things in the garden. Loving the camera even though I dont know how to use it, Full auto mode for me lol :D

Reading the manual is the best thing you can do!

Glad you're enjoying the camera though. It is an excellent bit of kit. I use mine in Aperture priority the most, followed by Shutter priority and then occasionally manual. I haven't used any of the "scene" modes yet.
