This is probably the first thread i've ever started on here.

I'm posting this half out of curiousity to what peoples reaction will be and half because it's such a big thing and is messing with my head a bit. It's not meant to be a medical thread either, just an insight into whats going on with me at the moment i suppose.

But first, a quick fill-in of my medical history. All the medical bods on here will have an idea of what i'm describing.

Anyways, for all my life i haven't been the most healthy of people because of various reasons. Ever since i was born i've had the following. Asthma, Epilepsy, Scoliosis of the back, various congenital heart defects and a few other things. So you could say that life has given me the raw deal. Except i don't see it that way, i've always been able to walk, i play drums in a couple of bands and basically just carried on as normal. I've always pushed myself a lot further than i should've and suprised the docs by getting this far. However, it has come at a price a few times. I've had to have various operations to fix either my back or my heart. All of which were done under a general anasthetic which is really risky for me because i have bad reactions to it! The most recent was 5 years ago when i had a faulty valve in my heart. The docs set me up for an op and set a date but brought it forward by 2 weeks at my pre-op exam. Apparently, it was either that or i wouldn't last those 2 weeks. I had the op and it was all successful and my heart is healthier than it's ever been.

Which brings me to why i'm writing this. Last saturday i had a letter from my back doctor saying that they're going to have to operate on my back. I've had a back op before but that was when i was 6. Anyways, i've known this was going to happen for a while but that letter just seemed to set it in stone. It's not going to be for another 3 months or so but it's still a scary prospect. I'm going to have a procedure done called an osteotomy. Basically, they're going to cut off one of my ribs to put it bluntly. The reason is because it's banging against my hip bone and causing a shed load of discomfort. Now, i'm not exactly looking forward to this. The recovery time is a bit of a trek as well, 6-12 months for a full one! There's risks in all of this, a little bit more in my case because of the dodgy heart and stuff. This is the most nervous i can remember being for any of the ops i've had probably because of what it involves. Actually, i wouldn't say nervous, more terrified! I know i've got to have it done because it's either that or my back slowly gets worse and worse. But hey, it's all part of life i suppose:)

Anyways, thanks for reading :)

Wonder if you could eat the rib afterwards. But anyway you've been through enough already a random back operation isn't going to hold you back.

nah, i'm not planning to let it hold me back. i'll find ways to do stuff, i always do :)

thanks for all the kind words guys, much appreciated :)

Ask if you can keep the rib and make it into a drum stick. Everyone will be like "WHOA, Check out that dude, he is playing the drums with HIS RIBS!!!"

ps. Good luck dude :) hope you make a speedy recovery

That'd be past rock though, more heavy. Get into some stupidly heavy metal band with that and job done.

Hope it goes well and you make a full recovery though!

My Mother had to have this done when she was younger she had a lot of work done on her because of her spine, she's more metal than flesh.

Best of luck man.
