Is it compulsory to install the zalman's fanmate?

Yip! I had one with my VF900, just took it out and connected it directly to a molex adapter :)

edit: You don't even need a molex adaptor, you can just plug it straight into a 3pin header on your motherboard. Although i plugged it into my PSU as i was told the voltage pull might be too much for the motherboard fan header!

Cool, cheers bro.

Should be fine plugged into the mobo. It's only really big fans like Deltas that draw a large current which may pose a risk to the board.:)

Having said that, the Fanmate is useful. Why not just use it?:p

Annoying and ugly, don't like things sticking out of my case.
I'll just have the mobo control the speed - or have it run at full pelt the whole time, depending on the noise :)

Always plugged my Zalman directly into the mobo header, I'm with you sup3rc0w looks pants them fanmate thingies.
